Posted this on IG and bears repeating here - @raynewman.bsky.social 's been carving out the "Brutalist ghost story" microgenre for the last several years so just wanted to draw attention to these great anthologies.
Pics of two Ray Newman book covers from 2022 and 2026 depicting Brutalist architecture with my text saying "If you don't know Ray Newman's Brutalist ghost stories, you need to"

@slimyswampghost.bsky.social New sculpture in Bristol (uk) made me think of you. Good luck with the film 👍🏻 Super news.
A sculpture of two humanoid figures with loud-hailers for heads. One holding a placard with 1% (crossed out) on it, the other holding a baseball bat behind the others head.

Decided to try to make audio recordings of all my postal work journals. About 200,000 words written sporadically since 1988. I've been releasing 25 mins of randomly selected entries in podcast form as regularly as I can. Here's a trailer for Episode 18 which is available now from the usual places.

99% of the world is dead. In a small Minnesota town, 1 woman writes the monthly local paper but it’s actually an epic horror story mailed to your door. THE END TIMES. Brilliantly conceived by @benjaminpercy.bsky.social , published by @badhandbooks.bsky.social. 1 issue in and I already love it.
A photo of THE END TIMES, a faux local newspaper written in the wake of an apocalyptic plague. A little white strip of paper has been placed on the upper right corner of the paper to obscure my mailing address.

Udo Kier - cinema’s fallen angel and an embodiment of the screen’s delicious power to corrupt - is gone. "I would live like the hero of Huysman's A Rebours,” he once told me. “Have no clocks, and hire two nuns to go by my window and pray at 12 o'clock each day."

If you're after suggestions for a short story or two to read for Halloween, here's the list I put together for A Personal Anthology a couple of years back. Not all horror or weird fiction, but mostly. open.substack.com/pub/apersona...

A Personal Anthology, by Ray Newman
At the start of 2023 I set myself a target to read 365 short stories, which I’ve now done – and which is why Jonathan asked me to contribute to this ongoing project.

On Britain. Shame we are outside the customs union - we will have to rely on diplomacy and some unpleasant trades with Trump to deal with the tariff threat. Security and defence co-operation with France, Germany, Poland, the rest of the EU is now absolutely critical.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey:
"This is a dark, dark day for people around the globe.
The world's largest economy and most powerful military will be led by a dangerous, destructive demagogue.
"The next President of the United States is a man who actively undermines the rule of law, human rights, international trade, climate action and global security.
"Millions of Americans - especially women and minorities - will be incredibly fearful about what comes next. We stand with them.
"Families across the UK will also be worrying about the damage Trump will do to our economy and our national security, given his record of starting trade wars, undermining NATO and emboldening tyrants like Putin.
"Fixing the UK's broken relationship with the EU is even more urgent than before. We must strengthen trade and defence cooperation across Europe to help protect ourselves from the damage Trump will do.

Seriously, fellow British peeps, go and vote on the 4th. Don't take it for granted that the Labour landslide victory is a done deal and your vote doesn't matter. Brexit was such a catastrofuck because half the people who had a right to vote on it couldn't be arsed because OBVIOUSLY it was done deal.

My latest cartoon for New Scientist.
First panel: a line of modern electric cars.

Second panel: A woman and a man are talking. She is holding a book.
She says "It's hard to get excited about these new electric cars when I've seen much ambitious possibilities in fiction"
"Sci-fi fan,huh?" he asks

Third panel.
"Uhh... yeah. Sci-fi." she says unsurely, looking at her book.

Fourth panel: We can see a page of the book. It shows animals happily driving food-shaped cars in the style of Richard Scarry. The cars are labelled: Pickle car, Apple car and Hotdog car.
