There should be alarm bells ringing at full tilt in Westminster when it comes to the coordinated intimidation campaign we saw over the weekend. What we got instead is a toothless statement that the government “condemns.” Not nearly good enough, I’m sorry.

What Happened In Dover and Portsmouth Should Scare Us
Not because hundreds of men protested, but because they appeared disciplined, coordinated and ready to do it again.

Abstract of article : This article focuses on a ‘day off’ spent at a Moroccan beach with ‘irregularized’ migrants from Central and Western Africa. For these young men on a dangerous quest for dignity and a better life, engaging in humorous exchanges and laughter was crucial to cultivate, maintain, and display the ‘right mentality’ while facing violent border regimes. This was an important feature in the articulation of their lives and journeys as ‘adventurers’ abiding by the imperative not to give up in the face of violence, uncertainty, and the risk of failure. The article also highlights how a focus on the workings of humor and laughter in the study of (‘illegal’) migration is important to foreground and acknowledge the inequities at the core of ethnographic encounters.

The tragic death of Henry Nowak is a devastating case of institutional failure by the police. But for the far-right it's become a central piece of propaganda, weaponising a family’s grief in pursuit of a political agenda, just as they did following the Southport murders of 2024. Read more here:

Really can’t overstate how bad the EHRC guidance is. Trans people are not allowed to use single-sex facilities that align with their gender but are also not allowed to use facilities that align with their sex if their physical appearance there might cause distress. Approach to policing this is 🤷‍♂️
