So now my boss told the exec he needed to pay for my time for the rest of the year like he promised. I don't have any real assignments, so I decided to continue to work on my project, though now without my team of 10 other people.

The exec got pissed I wouldn't use AI to write my code. Threatened to fire me, which he can't do. Pulled my funding, which he can. Came back a week later "nothing is working, we need you back." Ah, ok then. "But you gotta use the AI to write your code." WTF?

This came up at my job. An exec wanted to put a second team using AI to write code against my team on a project I had designed. I told my boss (who is not the exec) I was not, under any circumstances, going to engage in any neo-John-Henry displays.

Then I had kids, became a manager, bought a house, fighting execs telling me I have to use AI to write all my code. Leaves no time to even get into those situations anymore. I still write code, tons of code (I'm not one of *those* managers) but my hobbies now need to double as exercise/stress relief

Pedantic gamer nerds is exactly what has kept me from ever finishing a project, which is sad. I have done projects in the past where I spent significant amounts of time doing cross-platform testing and it's always one nerd who is running NetBSD on a Tomagatchi who end up with the top comment on HN.

I think it's useful for people who aren't very good at their jobs. I'm not sure how I feel about that. People need jobs because society demands it. We're never going to have UBI; there are too many "protestant with ethic" folks out there. But the pressure to use it is suspicious.

Moral of the story: you can just do things. I didn't do a lot here. I didn't need to get special bricks, I just used the ones I had found in the yard. I didn't need to mortar the bricks together. Is it a perfect oven? No. But it didn't need to be. It just needed to get hot.
