Cached US #KindleBookGiveaway: 12 copies of Empire of the East, by Fred Saberhagen, which I *have* and *enjoyed*. It's a collection of several novellas, set about 50k years from now, when physics has gotten ... a little squishy. It was followed by the Book of Swords.

Had a nice Zoom meeting yesterday with three Greek people who were starting up an ecological NGO (not their word but what I think they meant) ... called Sekoya. Based, they told me, on a short story I wrote ~30 years ago, about the ecological death of the Earth, "On Sequoia Time."

I started writing at 8. Sent my first story to a magazine at 13. Sold my first story at 18 to Asimov's. Couple years later, 3 publications under my belt, met a middle aged writer who resented me. (Not the first time, or last.) "Lucky," at such a young age.

Always liked this. Only one note: "pause to appreciate a beautifully written sentence." I stopped trying to write great sentences early in my career. That pause takes you out of the story. A great sentence, for my purposes, is invisible. A novel is not poetry. Your mileage is welcome to vary.

Right after 9/11, I solemnly assured people on the Continuing Time mailing list *of course* Republicans hadn't permitted the attack, or helped in it. 5 or 6 years later I had to confess, "because they weren't competent to." They'd absolutely have done it if they'd thought they'd get away with it.
