Rather difficult not to feel a bit gloomy about the state of the country atm, so I wasn’t going to make much of a thing of this anniversary this year. And then I saw this and started to cry. Because a free and united Germany in a free and united Europe was worth it. And is worth fighting for now.

No, you are entirely wrong. Sweden is signed up to a formal commitment to the euro without an opt-out. It just doesn't want to join, isn't going to join, nobody is going to make it join, and nobody wants to make it join. End of story. Which part don't you understand?

I worry that we are going absolutely crazy. A CDU politician (the eccentric type, often target of malice) has put a typical north/baltic sea beach chairs on his office balcony (he’s from the region). And somehow people lost it?? He had to send it back?? (He paid for it himself) What on earth?

Few hundred people gathered up by Garvaghy Road. Marquees are set up distributing food and coffee. Much livelier than the atmosphere up Drumcree hill where a smaller group of supporters were waiting, a group on folding chairs with a blanket over them.

I'm halfway through The Great Dictator, btw, and it's absolutely stellar. Cartland was born in 1901, so she became an adult just as the male population of Britain was vastly reduced, and many of the remaining men were deeply traumatised. (Reposted because I typo-ed 1931 before.)
