I think one reason it’s good to have a liberal arts education in the classic sense is that you don’t then spend time trying to invent the concept of “intellectual pursuits” from first principles

Irenaeus would have been a great poster. Erasmus would have been a great poster as well. Kierkegaard would have been a better poster than Joyce Carol Oates.

I don’t think anyone is arguing that a humanities education prevents evil or that all STEM majors are blind to the consequences of their actions. The claim is much, much more modest: A well-rounded education w/ elements of liberal arts & STEM tends to create a more educated, thoughtful person.

Can't say we weren't warned. Frank Herbert was writing about the civilizational threat these guys posed in the 1960s.
"Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."

"'Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a man's mind,'" Paul quoted.

On the one hand, it's just dumb. Universities are, in fact, real, and they exist in the world. American universities employ about 3x as many people as there are active duty servicemembers, so if soldiers are "real," then so are academics.

Many of the most annoying takes in the world would go away if people could accept that: • Math is liberal arts • Computer science is math Neither of these should be controversial and yet!

Some thoughts on higher ed: 1) Remember, lots of college students go to some type of public college, paying in-state tuition. 2) Overall, prices have slightly declined in the last decade. Yet they were already very high, driven by Baumol's cost disease and reduced subsidies to public colleges.

What Dolly taught us is that it is in fact possible to be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams of avarice but still be a fundamentally good person with a strong moral compass, and the only reason more rich people aren't like that is because they don't want to be.

Normally I just appreciatively read @jamellebouie.net 's columns-sharable video content just isn't my bag. But this is a very, very, very trenchant piece of commentary that captures a lot of how I increasingly understand the disjunction between the commentary environment and on-the-ground politics.

This is not MSW's best work. I wonder what "deconstructionism" is. We really need to get rid of the idea that anyone -- student, professor, staff -- associated with higher education (a far too broad category) is elite.

Can you get the job* you want without a PhD? If no, then do a PhD. If yes, read a lot and spend time with friends. *PhDs are professional degrees. As such, they are related to employment.

I too have been working/thinking/writing about this. But I think citizenship is too narrow a lens. I think we need to be explicit about human flourishing more broadly.

Imagine keeping a banger like this in your diary and failing to share it with the world. A different age, really.
In a journal entry made in 1844, Kierkegaard wrote:

If Hegel had written the whole of his logic and then said, in the preface or some other place, that it was merely an experiment in thought in which he had even begged the question in many places, then he would certainly have been the greatest thinker who had ever lived. As it is, he is merely comic.

Letting the university serve a primarily intellectual function is, perhaps-counterintuitively, the most practical thing you can do with the university as an institution. Everything else is using the handle of your screwdriver as a hammer.

War dead as numbers to defend his ego… it’s obscene The humans behind those numbers died in service to this republic. Politicians decide which wars to fight. Those who died went were they were told, and gave the last full measure of devotion this nation The President is craven and a disgrace
