Detectives (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿) investigating sex offences were more likely to be burned out and be less interested in victim care if they had high workload, poor work–life balance, or were mid-career. Officer wellbeing matters! Paper: doi.org/10.1080/15614263.2024.24261…
There is increasing awareness of police investigators’ wellbeing and the rising prevalence of burnout symptoms, creating long-term difficulties for policing. We utilized Maslach and Leiter’s approach to segment the workforce population for Rape and Serious Sexual Offence (RASSO) investigators based on a cross-sectional survey of 18 police forces (n = 2,108) across England and Wales. We fitted a Proportional Odds model to analyze the factors associated with the odds of becoming disengaged and burned out. The findings show that RASSO investigators were grouped as ‘effective’ (39%), ‘ineffective’ (26%), ‘overextended’ (24%), ‘disengaged’ (2%) and ‘burned out’ (9%). Strong effects predicting disengagement and burnout were noted for increased stress levels and organizational or self-imposed pressures to work despite being unwell. Higher odds of being disengaged or burned out were related to dissociative views toward victim-survivors, including negative attitudes to specialist training …

During Covid lockdown, if you had family round on Christmas Day the police could force their way into your home and make them return to their own homes. Does anybody know if this service is still available and, if so, do you have to book it?

A new scenario-based, evidence-informed, officer-safety training course for UK police led to a 10% reduction in use of force and no increase in injuries to officers. Paper: doi.org/10.1080/24751979.2024.24123…
We aim to test the impact of a new national curriculum for public and personal safety training (PPST) developed by the College of Policing, which aims to reduce the use of force by police. We conduct a large-scale Stepped Wedge Pragmatic Controlled Trial with a single police force and 1843 participating police officers. Officers were assigned to be trained during a particular week of the year. We find statistically significant reductions in the use of force by police officers as a result of the training. These effects are a reduction of between 8.0% and 10.9% in the propensity to use force in a given week compared to the counterfactual. The effect is accompanied by a significant reduction in the likelihood of injury to civilians, and no rise in the risk of harm to officers. We conclude that the PPST curriculum appears effective at reducing use of force by police in a large scale, robust trial.

A (very-rare!) evaluation of the relative financial costs of different policing strategies found a police/health co-response team for mental-health emergencies didn’t save any money (in terms of preventing subsequent calls, etc.). Details: doi.org/10.1007/s11292-024-09635-8
Background: Alternative responses to behavioral health emergencies are increasingly common interventions to address the overrepresentation of people with mental illness in the criminal legal and health systems. We compared costs associated with receiving a crisis response from police-as-usual versus a police-mental health co-response team that occurred as part of a randomized controlled trial.
Methods: Eligible 911 calls-for-service were randomized to receive a police-as-usual or a co-response. Next, we record-linked randomized events to emergency medical services, jail, outpatient services, and emergency department data to assess outcomes. We calculated per-person costs of service utilization following the randomized event from a public-sector perspective.
Results: Our analysis revealed no cost-savings from the co-response. Persons who received a co-response team response had greater 12-month post-randomized incident costs associated with outpatient behavioral health encounters and …
