Robert Melock was wrongfully convicted of murdering his grandmother in 1989 in IL. His conviction, in part, relied on a false polygraph analysis and the testimony of a forensic scientist who said glass in Melock’s shoes had “similar refractive indices” to the glass from the victim’s broken door. 1/2

This new paper is so cool! It shows that the media use passive voice, nominalizations, and intransitive verbs that obscure responsibility in cases of police killings. Because they do this, citizens are less likely to hold police officers responsible for bad behavior.
