ChatGPT is adding the signatures of real New Yorker cartoonists to its AI-generated images. So far, I've found the signatures of more than 15 contributors. "It’s slop, and unlike the other slop that I’ve encountered, this is slop that’s pretending to be me." www.niemanlab.org/2026/10/chat...
Left: A cartoon generated by ChatGPT and signed with Emily Flake’s signature that was posted to a Reddit forum in June. Right: A real Emily Flake cartoon published in The New Yorker on August 20, 2026 and licensed via The Cartoon Bank.

FRPG Player Tip: It can feel like cheating to ask the GM about changing up an aspect of your character you’re not enjoying, but the reality is that it doesn’t matter. The game is a story told collectively, and the continuity of that story is flexible enough to absorb whatever you need to have fun.

…and scene. (From @hotpaper.bsky.social)
A four-panel comic featuring two blobby-looking cartoon characters.

Character 1, looking beaten up, says: “I may have caused thousands to suffer. But if you kill me, you’ll be the same as me.”

Character 2 says: “I don’t care.” Character 2 then pulls a handgun and fires, implicitly aiming at character 1 (not seen).

FRPG GM Tip: It’s always good to have a sense of where the campaign might go, but never let a focus on the future distract you from the here and now. Too much time thinking about how things might unfold can leave you off balance when the players decide to take the game in an unexpected direction

“When the Wind Blows” cracks neck. Rolls shoulders. Raises both fists. Also, did the Russo brothers somehow forget they previously made a movie in which half the people in the universe died? Oh, wait — all that did was make a few people go to group therapy for a while. I guess it was all fine.
Avengers: Doomsday reportedly has at least 6 major deaths.

It's described as one of the darkest movies ever made.

FRPG GM and Player Tip: Talking about what type of game you all want to play — gritty and tactical, loose and story-focused, et al. — is important. But in addition to the styles of game you like to play, think about the styles you want to try, especially in a short campaign you can use as a testbed.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

FRPG GM Tip: Encourage the players to share the details whenever their characters gain cool new benefits through features or magic. Then make note of those benefits and look for ways to build scenarios into the campaign where the characters get to show them off.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

FRPG GM and Player Tip: To keep a combat-heavy game from slowing to a crawl with a large party, focus on everyone being ready to act. Get into the habit of starting your turn during the turn of the person ahead of you — and have the combatant who’s up next called out to make that easier.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

FRPG GM Tip: For many monsters — especially the most powerful foes — the bonus attached to a damage roll carries more weight than the dice being rolled for that damage. So if a monster is hitting too hard or too soft, adjust that bonus on the fly to create a foe who’s tougher or weaker as desired.

Justice will come for the Cornell 7. The internet is doing its thing. We need a task force on the Cornell 40-90 who got the invite and said nothing. We need to start naming and shaming these men so complicity becomes the worse alternative. These men become the cops that don't believe you, the doctors who dismiss you, the judges who "don't want to ruin his life", the congressmen who legislate you into silence. The rapists are the heart of the regime. These men are the bones. Break them.

FRPG Player Tip: Even the most serious games have room for humor and in-character joking, but respect the tone the GM sets for the campaign so you don’t push the humor too far. Being told that the red dragon boss is named “Yrtraazon” versus “Biff” should give you a sense of where the bar’s been set.

A line drawing showing a warrior on a flying griffon, a castle on a mountain, and a person reading a book from which those images are conjured. The illustration is by Chris Riddell.

Handwritten text reads:

Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier
is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it
his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the
knownothings, the authoritarians have us all in
prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and
soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain
duty to escape, and to take as many people with us
as we can.
