Amazon is "investing" $20 billion in data centers to create around 1000 jobs. What sort of investment is this? $16 million for one job (minus all the jobs the data centers will automate away). If the state is putting literally any money into this it's theft.

If I were the owner of the @washingtonpost.com, I would not do a deal with the people who dismembered my columnist. Seems like a low bar, but Bezos managed to not clear yet another one. The world is awash in capital and that this is the choice should tell you all. He’s so poor, all he has is money.

This article shamefully misses the point. We can have greenfield development that provides tons of housing AND is not a sprawl development pattern. Thats far better for municipalities fiscally, and far better for human beings and the planet. So why isn't that an option mentioned here?

We've been to 100s of antique shops and we can no longer ignore the glassware crisis. Noone wants exotic candy dishes anymore. Paperweight market has died. Nobody wants a sorta peacockish glass thing for some table or shelf. Everyone used to have these. Now people just throw their candy on the floor

There's something uniquely perverse about utility companies trying to justify huge price spikes for normal families because, "well, we need to serve the big AI data centers. You LOVE AI, right? We all do! 😇 won't someone think of the AI data centers? 😭We all need to make sacrifices 🥺"

I talked to 10 current and former Meta employees about the company's surrender to the right on speech issues. All were upset. One person called the changes "a precursor to genocide" www.platformer.news/meta-fact-ch...
But in its panicked retreat from the system it spent years building, Meta may now be putting billions of users at risk. Just because Meta deleted that line about hateful speech causing offline violence doesn't mean it isn't true. And now the company has all but declared open season on immigrants, transgender people and whatever other targets that Trump and his allies find useful in their fascist project.

"I can't tell you how much harm comes from non-illegal but harmful content," a longtime former trust and safety employee at the company told me. The classifiers that the company is now switching off meaningfully reduced the spread of hate movements on Meta's platforms, they said. "This is not the climate change debate, or pro-life vs. pro-choice. This is degrading, horrible content that leads to violence and that has the intent to harm other people."

Meta abdicating any role in policing its platform whatsoever while simultaneously going Mach 10 on shoving as much AI deepfake slop into our brains as possible is, of course, so logical it's hard to understand why anyone ever could be surprised

One of the reporters put it bluntly in an older article: You pour everything into your work hoping to convince a few people to subscribe. Takes time to build trust. Then one admin move tanked the paper's reputation + dumped 200K subs down the toilet in a few hours. Who faces the consequences?

NEW: Meta tells me that it is deleting the AI profiles that are currently going viral, and that there is "confusion" about these versus what is to come in the future. A few of them are being deleted as we speak: www.404media.co/metas-ai-pro...
After this article was originally published, Liz Sweeney, a Meta spokesperson, told 404 Media that "there is confusion" on the internet between what Hayes told the Financial Times and what is being talked about online now. She also said they are deleting these older profiles.
"There is confusion: the recent Financial Times article was about our vision for AI characters existing on our platforms over time, not announcing any new product," Sweeney said. "The accounts referenced are from a test we launched at Connect in 2023. These were managed by humans and were part of an early experiment we did with AI characters. We identified the bug that was impacting the ability for people to block those AIs and are removing those accounts to fix the issue.”
