UK: we don't know how many people have died prematurely due to the extreme heat, but as unprecedented temps and humidity overwhelm hospitals and public transport, remember that BP pocketed $3.2bn (£2.4bn) in profits in the first 3 months of 2026 - more than double in the same period last year.

6/ That former Hildebrand lobbyist is rewriting the EPA's methane rules, and my reporting shows he has been seeking input from oil industry groups backed by Hildebrand himself. Now the agency is poised to make specific carveouts for stripper wells.
A screenshot of text that reads in part: “The IPAA’s Lee Fuller, on a private conference call with industry representatives, also spoke glowingly about a meeting with Szabo’s office last year. Previously, he said, the EPA had never even considered the group’s requests to create separate methane rules for stripper wells. This time, though, agency staff brought it up unprompted — which suggests that it was already on Szabo’s agenda.”

I know there is a lot going on, and not all of this is new, but numerous aspects of this OMB proposal are highly alarming and would, if enacted, effectively force American scientists receiving federal funding (which is...most of them in some capacity or another) to stop engaging with the public.

Another significant change is the ability to terminate grants if they determine a project no longer advances agency priorities or the national interest. Grants typically run 3-5 years, so losing funds would be extremely disruptive, canceling in-progress research, personnel funding, etc. 7/n

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.

While the situation is grim at NIH, it's closer to catastrophic at NSF. They're just not able to move any money out the door. It appears OMB has them on lockdown. www.science.org/content/arti....
Figure showing NSF funding curve in 2026 compared to prior years. The line is nearly at zero as of mid February. As Science and Nature have reported, NIH and NSF have made only a relative handful of new grants since their 2026 appropriations became law, partly because of the OMB delays. A new rumor among the U.S. academic community is that, even after OMB signs off, it will hold agencies to the levels Trump requested for them in May 2025 rather than the more generous amounts Congress approved. For NSF, which received an appropriation of $8.8 billion, a version of those rumors holds that OMB must approve any spending above the president’s request of $3.9 billion—and that any additional outlays must clearly align with the administration’s priorities.
