Saudi Arabia urged to reconcile with UAE to drive back Houthi separatists in Yemen
Relations between the two countries soured in January when a UAE-backed force was defeated by Saudi Arabia in Yemen Saudi Arabia is being urged to reconcile with the United Arab Emirates over Yemen as the price Riyadh must pay to form a military alliance capable of driving the Houthis back. Relations between the UAE and Saudi Arabia in Yemen, where both had backed anti-Houthi forces, plummeted in January this year when a force with which it had been aligned – the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) – was attacked and defeated by Saudi Arabia in a move intended to squash its attempt to recreate a separate southern state. The UAE subsequently effectively quit Yemen. Continue reading...

Planting trees in the wrong places is not a climate solution
Global tree-planting campaigns can harm natural drylands. Effective climate restoration must work within dryland ecosystems, not seek to replace them.

"...It is no simple longing for the home town or the country of our birth. The emotion is Janus-faced: we are torn between a nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known." (Carson McCullers)

Unaffordable rents. Spiralling bills. Not enough council homes. People need bold change on housing, not more of the same.
Headline reads: “It’s time to get housing costs under control.”
Quote from Zack Polanski, Leader of the Green Party:
“The Prime Minister promises he won’t ‘back away from difficult issues’ at the Labour Party Conference, but he has little to offer people who are struggling with unaffordable housing and spiralling bills.
“While Labour pats itself on the back in Liverpool, I’ve been knocking on hundreds of doors in Holborn and St Pancras. People want to see bold change, not more of the same - and that’s why we’re calling for rent controls and 150,000 new social and council homes every year.”

A couple of #Deer photos to share. The first one is from yesterday evening, #Fawns Danny and Desi were the early birds for seeds. Please admire their little nubby antlers! And the second one features a shy doe and her female fawn (spots faded, no baby antlers). Name suggestions?
Two male fawns eating birdseed off rocks, in the backyard. Danny is on the left and his antler nubs are noticeable. Desi is on the right, with the lighter colored coat, and smaller antler nubs. We think Danny is several weeks older than Desi, but both born this year.
Grass, trees, and shrubs in the background. A winding slate path runs through the yard too. Two shy female deer. The mom is the one walking away from the camera, while her fawn is facing the camera with her head up. When they are side by side the adult doe is noticeably bigger than her fawn. The fawn has lost all her spots, and does not have antler nubs, so we know she is female. We have seen this pair come by for a few weeks now, but they are so skittish when I try to take photos. This is the best pic out of many attempts.
