This is an absolute tragedy. Many have much to answer for. Academics don't control the media, but we do control how we treat colleagues. We can stop the next academic suicide. We can offer care & concern rather than enjoying the debate or uneven self-righteous "standards." RIP Dr. Arday #academicsky

Whether on individuals or the whole sector, attacks are meant to distract. Scholars too rattled to do world-changing work is the point. You are meant to be scared -- and to turn on one another. So this Monday, take one hour to write that thing you want to write purely as resistance. #academicsky

The Delightful Kitsch of Easter Lamb Cake
The comic essayist David Sedaris perfectly captures the absurdity of ritual in his famous French-class skit. Sedaris, an American, attempts to describe in broken French how “the rabbit of Easter … he bring of the chocolate … he come in the night when one sleep on a bed.” His Polish and Italian classmates scoff at the idea of a small, long-eared mammal that sneaks into children’s homes each spring to lavish them with sweets.

Everyone on our team is sharing their favourite habit for a better academic writing life. In case you need help with a book this year, Stanford-trained historian Daniela is bilingual & works with both English- and Spanish-speaking scholars. scholarsandwriters.com/bio/daniela-... #academicsky
Daniela's headshot and 2 paragraphs: I love helping writers figure out what their book is all about––and shape those arguments into a compelling book proposal. But I like the fine-grained work too: sharpening ideas, clarifying structure, and polishing language. Favourite services: Book Proposals, Book Development, Developmental Editing.
“Read good fiction. It sounds obvious, but for overextended people, the case for it isn't self-evident. Reading fiction retrains our besieged attention. It reminds us to orient the reader before launching into interpretation. In good fiction, information arrives when it can be absorbed and when it matters.”
