I honestly think you have a mix of media and social media for this. Sensationalism and fear work to grab attention. Local media knows crime stories are low effort, but constantly reporting on crime distorts people’s view of their communities. And the algorithms only amplify that problem.

An economic epiphany: I realized that money has gravity. If you have little money, there's not enough 'gravity' to hold it together, as it's pulled away towards higher gravity money-heavy masses. If you have a lot, smaller amounts of money are attracted and fall toward your large financial mass.
