Global model ensembles are in strong agreement that a prolonged &anomalous nearly West-wide autumn heatwave will develop this week & persist for 10+ days. While some daytime records may be set, this event will be more notable for its persistence & breadth. [Thread]

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I’m publishing something tomorrow about Alpha School. One of the things I focus on is how it is an incubator for EdTech platforms with the ambition to hyperscale. Alpha may only have a few hundred students nationwide, but its founders are developing MANY extractive EdTech brands. This is one:

The early info we have is damning: SoR doesn’t lead to long term success, but it DOES: normalize high stakes testing & holding children back, justify punitive policies and privatization, stigmatize teachers, & further drains education of its capacity to generate an educated, thoughtful electorate.

The federal government, by which I mean THIS federal government, picking this up, at a time when they are otherwise draining edu of all substance, should be all you need to know about what a grift SoR is. If it were effective at enhancing understanding and education, they’d destroy it.

I've spent a lot of time inside classrooms of very poor schools, including working with well-resourced parents like @nhannahjones.bsky.social who opted for those schools out of social obligation. Her experience - and agony - is common and wrenching. She's just one of (very few) willing to be honest.

"Kids don't read anymore." My circ stats beg to differ. The feedback I got back from Summer Reading really begs to differ. Kids are reading, and kids want to read more. The way kids are being taught means they don't read a lot of full books in class. But that doesn't mean they don't want to read.

If the AI push in higher ed were really centered around student learning, it wouldn't look like what it looks like now. The willingness to transform liberal arts education wholesale overnight cannot seriously be motivated primarily by educational principles and beliefs.
Far be it from me to deny that a subject matter or field may have special uses to which AI can be put and which some instruction can promote. But none of this requires every course to waste precious class time on this task. And finally, detailing AI’s potential shortcomings and the moral costs of AI employment will make students use it differently only if they are able to opt out. Such efforts, in other words, will meaningfully change students’ use patterns with AI only if they are able to exercise meaningful choice about when, how, and why to use it. For students to be using AI judiciously, they must be able to confidently operate without it.

Jesus Christ: after a recent ruling by the Eighth Circuit that allowed Act 372 to take effect, an Arkansas county has banned all children from checking out any books in the adult section, bringing home any DVDs, or using the self-checkout kiosk in its public libraries.
More recently in Craighead County — symbolically, at least, Ground Zero for the state’s attack on libraries, thanks to Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Jonesboro) — the library announced several changes to circulation as it relates to minors. In a Facebook post, the library listed a number of changes to library policies, including:

Minors are prohibited from using the self-checkout kiosks;
Children under 13 years old may only check out materials from the designated children’s collection, while minors age 13-17 can only check out from the children or teen sections;
Minors may not check out DVDs at all; and
Minors are prohibited from entering or purchasing anything from the Friends of the Library Bookstore.

I’m a Dartmouth professor. Pres. Beilock implies in this piece that she speaks for us as a college. She does not. I don’t permit AI in my classroom. Not because it stole my work; because as I wrote in @chronicle.com, most of my students hate it—and feel betrayed by the college—even more than I do.

As we start a new year, it's really important that we believe that students have something worth saying, that we make space for them to say it, and that we develop classroom communities where students can listen to one another and sound themselves out. This is a time for stances, not terminal irony.
