Always grateful when any lit mag publishes me, but it's a special thrill to break into a new one. Grateful to the editors at Cleaver Magazine for publishing this poem of mine in their latest issue, #54, live today. ✨
An image that depicts three framed, imageless rectangles, the back two larger than the most vivid in front, all of which could be mirrors or blank photographs. They all are angled facing forward, sitting atop a mantle. The headline (title of the poem the image links to) says "An Orphan Absorbing Her Late Mother's Gaze" A poem by Sarah Carey that appears in Issue #54 of Cleaver Magazine and titled "An Orphan Absorbing Her Late Mother's Gaze Wonders If Any Vision Is Eternal"The number 54 is shown in black with a fire-flame image in front of it. And anyway, winning the Sweet Lit Poetry Contest was 'sweet' for many reasons, including how learning to play with the duplex form taught me that, pardon the cliche, it's still possible to teach an old dog new tricks. (my actual old dog has recovered well from the neuritis that prompted it!)

Thrilled to share that a duplex I wrote inspired by my dog's bout with neuritis last fall won 1st place in the Sweet Lit Poetry Contest! I'm beyond grateful to judge Meghan Sterling & the Sweet editors (including @katierpoet.bsky.social !) Good news always feels so fleeting, but I'm savoring this.

Immersing myself in the #bookshelf: A classic from Adrienne Rich & a more recent & timely gem from Luke Hankins.
An excerpt from Luke Hankins' poem, "Category Error" states, "Imagine a world in which each/beautiful creature could be trusted—" from his book, Testament. The whole poem appears alongside the excerpt along with the book cover, a pen and ink drawing of a figure embracing another figure, which is The Prodigal Son by Honore Daumier, courtesy of the National Gallery of Art.An excerpt of Adrienne Rich's poem, "Song," from her book Diving into the Wreck", reads, "You want to ask, am I lonely?" The whole poem appears alongside, and next to the poem, a photo of the book cover, showing tempestuous, churning waves.

How can it be over?! My poetry workshop, and Sarah Anderson's fiction workshop, culminated officially on Thursday evening with a student showcase reading at @thelynxbooks.bsky.social on Thursday evening. It was powerful, it was magical, & the students all outdid themselves!
A group of students, men and women, are standing and kneeling in front of the Lynx bookstore sign for a photo that was taken inside of the store at the end of a student showcase reading on Feb. 19. Students from the two workshops, which were offered by the store in the previous six weeks, studied poetry and fiction with instructors Sarah Carey and Sarah Anderson.

Sometimes you've just gotta make the ask. We got lucky! The theme of my poetry workshop, which concludes tom. eve with a reading at @thelynxbooks.bsky.social, was writing joy & gratitude in poetry. The great Ada Limon had these words for my students. I hope they hold them as closely as I will.
A quote from Ada Limon to Sarah Carey's poetry students from her workshop at The Lynx Books states "Keep writing and fostering joy. Joy is how we find courage to meet the moment with action. It's not just about making a poem, it's about making a life we can live in without fear."
