Moon-snail shell

Gray spirals
hold your voice
I press it to my ear
while the years
run backward.

My small fingers
sifting sand
in golden ratio,
your invisible
hand around mine.
A foamy ocean
mouth swallows
our skipped stones.
We dance across
driftwood ribs
and find the singing
tidepools,
dipping our ankles with
the sunbathing starfish.
We never made wishes into the waves.

I trace the gray edges of this shell,
the way your thumb must have curved
around me,
humming sunshine
before you left.

Jane

by Tina Barry
Jane,
Your son calls to say you’re dying.
While you could still talk, I asked

if you remembered the design
studio where we met.

More exhale than words: I remember.
Drowning in that strange sea of satin and chenille,

piles of plush cotton, we butted tables
together, safe on our fabric-strewn raft,

crafted a language we shared for 40 years.

Jane,
     All spring I’ve been stuck
without you in this in-between

my skin numb to the velvet of flowers.
Finches flash, gaudy in their pinwheel-yellow

coats. A color you once mixed in a minute—
lemon, cadmium, the tiniest dot of Vandyke brown.

For you, nothing could be bright enough.

Arthritic Shoulders Make Nice Homes by Adalain E. Sans, 2026

when my breath catches
i rest my chin
on the shelf of your shoulder,

mouth pressed
to the small ridge of bone
beneath your skin.

sometimes
i follow the scatter of age spots
with one finger,

counting them
like porch lights
on a road i’ve taken home
a hundred times.

between your collarbone
and shoulder blade,
there is a hollow
made for returning.

i fit there.
i’ve been there before.

warm beneath my cheek
the ache
loosens its grip.

the hollow becomes home.

outside,
the world keeps asking
something of me.

here,
it asks for nothing.

"Remember that you are a transitional being—a provisional presence among countless other provisional beings." A beautiful interview with Boston-based author, critic, translator, and professor Patrick Sylvain: www.poetose.com/pub/creators... #poet #poetry #authorinterview #publishing #writer
Patrick Sylvain"Haiti’s history is never merely historical for me—it is lived memory. Colonialism, revolution, occupation, dictatorship, migration, and resistance continue to shape the emotional and political landscape of Haitian life. My poems often explore how these histories remain inscribed upon bodies, languages, and landscapes." -Patrick Sylvain"Poetry, for me, is a space where complexity can exist without demanding immediate resolution. If the poems possess any power, I hope it comes from their willingness to remain with difficult truths rather than turning away from them. Human experience is rarely singular, and poetry should honor that multiplicity." -Patrick Sylvain"I no longer believe language can fully capture reality. Rather, I think poetry approaches truth asymptotically—it moves toward it without ever completely possessing it. That uncertainty is precisely what keeps me writing." -Patrick Sylvain

Happy pub day to poet Sarah Schwartz! Read a wonderful interview with her on our website: www.poetose.com/pub/creators... or via our Substack at poetose.substack.com You can get a copy of THE CALLING at: www.poetose.com/store/p17/th... #poetry #poet #poems #publisher #writers
Sarah Schwartz's beautiful debut collection of poems, THE CALLING, contends that we are each called to a way of seeing the world. Moving from the microscopic view of a chemist to the macroscopic view of a geologist, the mathematical view of an architect to the exuberant view of a painter, these poems both delight in and resist the notion of an “occupation.” Schwartz writes: "We are made of many strange shapes, and we don’t even think about it." These poems ponder our abundant strangeness and don't shy away from "what is most radical about human existence." “With THE CALLING, Sarah Schwartz takes on the guises of various professions, ranging from ‘The Astronaut’ to ‘The Matriarch’ to ‘The Poet,’ to ask meditative questions about what it means to be human and the lines between ‘biological essentialism versus cultural socialization.’ The speakers in these poems are seeking answers about life’s abounding mysteries: the nature of desire, how to form meaningful connections, among others. Schwartz’s poems are like little jewels, finely shaped and expertly polished.” ~Stevie Edwards, author of THE WEATHER INSIDE and QUIET ARMOR.

"Sighting" by Meghan Sterling

Delicate birdsong
and yesterday’s rain
disappearing into grass
and pavement, down
sewer grates and gutters,
the greedy river wild and
stuttered with wind like
a fork’s metal tines. I don’t
know who I will be today—
the bird on the wire or the bird
in flight. Silver tarnished or polished.
How can I be enough
do enough, feel enough.
O river bird. O drowned hours.

"Jo can fly. But don’t look up, she won’t be in the sky overhead, the one we can see, the sky that hosts all things that fly..." "The Sky Below" by Philip Matcovsky: www.poetose.com/pub/the-sky-... #prosepoem #prosepoetry #poem #flight #publisher
The prose poem, "The Sky Below," by Philip Matcovsky:

Jo can fly. But don’t look up, she won’t be in the sky overhead, the one we can see, the sky that hosts all things that fly. Jo sails the inner sky, where there isn’t a bird, plane, or sun, just a vacancy, an endless hole. Inside the belly of Earth there isn’t a mass of fiery metal as hot as the sun, like scientists claim, but an emptiness instead that provides relief, Jo says, the inner sky, where she floats mostly, kind of hovers in place, as if a gentle hand is holding her up. She spreads her arms and legs to feel like a star. Jo describes it as cleansing; compares it to sitting on the beach being washed by the ocean’s breath and the rocking sound of waves, forward and backward. Before and afters are rinsed away there, in the sky below your feet. My favorite part is that Jo talks to Earth from the inner sky, not to invisible earth creatures, but to Earth itself. What is said between them is very personal, about who she truly is, and where she comes from. I’m left to imagine the details.Handwritten prose poem, "The Sky Below," by Philip Matcovsky:

Gardening at Night handwritten by Alex Stolis

My sponsor says: get a plant
your first year sober;
no relationships.

At Home Depot I pile a cart—
shredded mulch, orange-stickered
shovels, rake. Forget gloves.

Your mom rolled her eyes, made
gallons of lemonade. I chain-smoked,
dug tight rows and misted rainbows;

scalped the lawn between jobs,
sleepwalk watered—hose
swaying in time with crickets.

Next spring was bone dry
then biblical deluge, then you:
toddling barefoot behind me

through fresh-cut grass, babbling
to dandelions—
too pretty, too pretty.

"Love is one of the essential experiences of being alive. Through love we mature, we grow, and we gradually become whole. Love enables us to see ourselves more clearly, to hear our own inner voice, and to understand who we truly are." ~Xue Di www.oceanstatestories.org/q-a-with-xue...
"Blue White Water is a sequence of twelve interconnected prose poems. At its heart is a melancholy love story based on a relationship I experienced while living in mainland China. The work explores urban life, the landscape of the modern city, the restlessness of youth, and the atmosphere of repression, longing, and illusion that defined that era. It tells the story of a lonely poet and his love for a beautiful, gentle woman. That love flows like water—bringing joy and bewilderment, tenderness and distress. Desire is inseparable from the pressure of the political climate. At times the water is clear; at others it is polluted. Sometimes it rushes forward in torrents; sometimes it dries up altogether. That is the blue and white water flowing through the heart of a young poet." -Xue Di“Night is my favorite time of day. I love its stillness, its power to gather one’s thoughts, and the harmony it offers to solitude. At night you can hear your own inner voice more clearly. You can also hear nature breathing peacefully as it rests. That quiet breath carries a fragrance of its own, one that completely captivates the creative spirit.” -Xue Di“Love is one of the essential experiences of being alive. Through love we mature, we grow, and we gradually become whole. Love enables us to see ourselves more clearly, to hear our own inner voice, and to understand who we truly are. Through the person we love, we come to understand ourselves more deeply and discover the meaning of our lives.” -Xue DiCover of Blue White Water

“Felt-Tip Markers” by Deanna Lernihan: www.poetose.com/pub/felt-tip... Deanna Lernihan is a public health professional whose work spans mental health, food sustainability, and animal welfare. She enjoys writing poetry, getting lost in nearby woods, but mostly spending time with her family. #poem
While you were dying, I tested felt-tip markers on paper until they bled in faded streaks, as if I could practice emptying desk drawers of all they carried, the old love notes, to-do lists, phone numbers without names, passwords to expired accounts, forgotten memberships to forgotten places. You might have said, while you were dying, that it was some false sense of control to determine what to keep and what to throw away, what held purpose and what didn’t, and you might have marveled, just to make me laugh, at how I’d finally learned to sneeze quietly, but I’d like to think I was just making room for you, because I wanted to hold more space for you than ever.

A beautiful new interview up with poet Veronica Kornberg, author of STRANGE GIFT and Winner of the Wandering Aengus Press Book Award in Poetry 2025: www.poetose.com/pub/creators...
“Craft-wise, there are so many techniques to break open the door to mystery—the surprisingly-placed line break, the open fields of blank space for breathing, repetition and chant, the compression and expansion of time within a short space—to name just a few.” -Veronica Kornberg“It’s always the poem itself that demands the form that satisfies, so I try to stay attuned and open to what a poem is telling me it wants to be.” -Veronica Kornberg“For me, one of the dearest things that poetry can do is to show how extraordinary the ordinary truly is. ” -Veronica Kornberg“Like most important desires in life, finding a place for myself will never feel 100% finished, but I think that's a good thing—to keep seeking and expanding.” -Veronica Kornberg
