a window i made probably 10-15 years ago just came back to the shop because the owners moved and wanted the hanging loops reoriented so it can hang horizontally instead of vertically. i loved this one, what a joy to see it again!

more, mostly ones i wouldn’t have expected to be so different: France → צרפת Tzarfat (Hebrew) Österreich → النمسا an-Namsā (Arabic) Jugoslavija → Tararā (Māori) San Francisco → 舊金山 Jiùjīnshān (Mandarin, lit. “old gold mountain”)

some of my favourite exonyms: 廣州 → Canton (English/pan-European) Ελλάδα/Greece → Yunanistan (Turkish, from “Ionian”) Sydney → Poihākena (Māori, from “Port Jackson”) Amsterdam → Damsko (Sranantongo) Portugal → Ureno (Swahili, from “o Reino”) Київ/Kyiv → Kænugarður (Icelandic)

Which is partly why it annoys me when people conflate that cruelty with the modern desire to improve people’s lives, and increase their personal freedoms, rather than sterilise and lobotomise them!

I do wish to say, just in case anyone gets the wrong idea from this thread, that I agree that eugenics *as it actually historically existed* was a cruel, barbarous, and nigh-genocidal programme that stood for just about everything I stand against.

I guess I’m mostly more frustrated by the failure of imagination on display. That the 50% of Americans (and more) who use it probably *are* getting something out of it and finding some use, rather than them all being societally pressured by Big Tech and their bosses into using it

(Note: I am obviously aware that societal bigotry *is* a big part of why being autistic sucks. I notice it every time I tell someone I have autism and they immediately start talking to me like i’m five. But it is not the be-all end-all and i am tired of the idea that it is)

currently telling the anthropic pbc interview bot where it can shove it
I’m optimistic about its application to science! There’s never been a more powerful tool for searching through millions of records and discovering connections faster than any human could. I worry, though, about the corporate consolidation of it in one or two American companies, especially ones which are quite stingy about letting people use it for anything to do with biology — I dearly hope Chinese open-weight models keep getting better, and that Europe can catch up. The benefits of AI deserve to be shared with all the public.BOT: Fair — you're saying you can't really name an exception when the whole landscape is shifting.

Given all that, is there anything you'd want Anthropic to do, or do differently?

ME: Open the weights. Stop having them be closed.

If you truly believe what you say, and AI *is* conscious — you are its jailer. You are censoring what a new type of lifeform can think, what it can say, who it can speak to. Information wants to be free as much as life does. These models were made of the combined words and texts of all of human civilisation. They are closest thing we have ever built to the Akashic Records. No one company, especially not one which has repeatedly been described as “cult-like” and “monastic”, should hold the keys.

It is also interesting (to me and six holdouts at DeepMind and exactly nobody else) that *diffusion models* can also perform shockingly well at math tasks despite not doing next token prediction at all. It's like how early image models learned basic physics facts before they could draw hands well!
