Metcalfe was UNLEASHED……
Metcalfe was unleashed. He roasted chickens until 1am, and stripped off the meat with his hands. A supplier pitched him a small freshwater lobster, called a crayfish. He was mad about rocket. A Pret a Manger sandwich cookbook, published in 1996, retains the zany air of experiment: lamb, redcurrant jelly and aubergine; goats cheese, pink peppercorns, tomatoes. The formula didn’t come easy. It took Metcalfe and Beecham four years to open their second shop, on Bishopsgate, in the City of London. When they did, they played opera at full blast to accompany the sandwiches. “It was preposterous,” said Metcalfe. “But it worked.”

on the other hand, “The Congress“ is remarkably prescient, has themes i think about a lot, and only suffers because the movie itself is absolute barely-watchable *ass* that has as much subtlety as an anvil, ignores promising characters, and is always either eye-searingly ugly or soul-crushingly drab

They’re calling it an original script but it’s actually an adaptation of this Kurt Vonnegut quote
During the Vietnam War, which lasted longer than any war we've ever been in - and which we lost - every respectable artist in this country was against the war. It was like a laser beam. We were all aimed in the same direction. The power of this weapon turns out to be that of a custard pie dropped from a stepladder six feet high.

Indeed, this is the very second paragraph on Alpöge’s own Wikipedia page, so it certainly sounds like *he* finds AI very useful at doing maths!
On July 19, 2026, Alpöge presented an explicit counterexample to the Jacobian conjecture in three-dimensional space, stating that it was discovered using the Claude Fable 5 AI model.[5][6] He announced a counterexample to the Carathéodory conjecture on August 19, 2026 using the model. Four days later, he announced a positive answer to Hopf's problem concerning the existence of a complex structure on a 6-dimensional sphere using AI tools.[7]

That would be the same dispute in which the original blog post from Alpöge and Buckmaster explicitly enumerated the LLMs they used in the process, yes cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/st... The question in dispute there is “did OAI illicitly access A&B’s work for their own gain”, not “can LLMs do maths”
My work with Levent has been a purely personal collaboration, free of any
institutional agreements or official involvement by either of our employers. We
used several LLMs throughout: Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s Codex, especially
with GPT-5.6 Sol and, more recently, Astra. The latter was only used for
writeups and auditing our arguments.
For most of the past year progress was slow. We worked through the lit-
erature and upgraded various preliminary results, up to obtaining finite time
blow up for the Incompressible Porous Media equation (with smooth forcing).
This was until about a month ago, when we had real progress: on August 15th,
we obtained the blow up results, with smooth forcing, for both Boussinesq and
Euler. I can say the first LLM generated proof Levent sent me was the most
horrendous I have ever read; we verified it on Lean on August 22nd. Since this
point, we have been working around the clock to understand this proof and turn
it into something readable.

Under the UK plans, under-16s will be banned from most platforms, while “addictive features” that encourage “compulsive overuse” will be turned off by default for those aged 16 and 17. They will also face an overnight curfew from midnight to 6am.

currently telling the anthropic pbc interview bot where it can shove it
I’m optimistic about its application to science! There’s never been a more powerful tool for searching through millions of records and discovering connections faster than any human could. I worry, though, about the corporate consolidation of it in one or two American companies, especially ones which are quite stingy about letting people use it for anything to do with biology — I dearly hope Chinese open-weight models keep getting better, and that Europe can catch up. The benefits of AI deserve to be shared with all the public.BOT: Fair — you're saying you can't really name an exception when the whole landscape is shifting.

Given all that, is there anything you'd want Anthropic to do, or do differently?

ME: Open the weights. Stop having them be closed.

If you truly believe what you say, and AI *is* conscious — you are its jailer. You are censoring what a new type of lifeform can think, what it can say, who it can speak to. Information wants to be free as much as life does. These models were made of the combined words and texts of all of human civilisation. They are closest thing we have ever built to the Akashic Records. No one company, especially not one which has repeatedly been described as “cult-like” and “monastic”, should hold the keys.

In 2026 we mark the 120‑year anniversary of the imperial authorization granted in 1906 by Tsar Nicholas II for the proposed Bering Strait tunnel and U.S.–Russia transcontinental railway project—a bold vision that briefly united Eurasia and North America on paper before being formally cancelled the following year. Though never realized, the project represented one of the earliest serious governmental endorsements of a fixed intercontinental rail link across the Arctic frontier.

Re: “It’s not a sex thing” — For me personally, I’ve found that furry isn’t a sex thing *in and of itself*, but it does serve as a filter of sorts for exploring sexual topics that would be grosser/more taboo with real people.
I think of it like cartoon violence. If a real person got hit with a sledgehammer to the face, they’d probably have to go to hospital and it’d all be quite disturbing. But when Daffy Duck gets hit by a mallet, you laugh, because you know he’s a cartoon animal and it’s all going to be fine!

Even people with political affiliations spoke in a more expansive and less wonky register. The Price of Forever

When a grief-tech conglomerate starts selling resurrection, a boy who won't let his dead dog go, voiced by Jacob Tremblay, becomes its most devoted customer. The founder, a showman who has died twice and bills both incidents, is voiced by Al Pacino. Matt Damon voices the company's guilt-ridden pitchman, unraveling what's inside the returns queue. Sean Connery voices Death himself — retired, outsourced, furious at the fine print. Tim Burton's stop-motion hell of upsold eternity builds to a family plan nobody survives.

This film is not real. It is the output of a game. The title, description, cast, crew, rating, quotes, and scores are all invented.
The fire took the town. The vault kept the money.
Backburn

As a wildfire swallows an evacuated mountain town, a dying vault designer, Samuel L. Jackson, leads a crew back in to open the federal evidence vault before it burns — with his own oxygen bottle counting down. A prison fire-camp inmate, Glen Powell, is dragged along for his hands; a cartel accountant, Ethan Hawke, knows which bag is worth dying for; the marshal left behind to guard it, Claire Foy, wants all of them in cuffs. Nobody leaves until the door is open.
