There was so much sadness in Cooperstown this weekend as his fellow Hall of Famers braced for this news. Ryno was so beloved. His smile, his warmth, his kindness were ever present. He was always there for anyone who needed help. RIP to one of my favorite people in baseball

On my 15th birthday, I was in the stands for Ryne Sandberg’s last game at Wrigley Field. He raised his cap as the theme from “The Natural” played before making his exit. It also happened to be the last time Harry Caray led the crowd in singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

My friend just told me that when her dad, who is a huge Cubs fan, was in the hospital for heart surgery, she wanted to buy him a Ryne Sandberg “get well soon” Cameo but couldn't afford it. She contacted him and Sandberg sent her dad a message and a selfie for free.

I grew up idolizing Ryne Sandberg. Saw his last games at Wrigley Field, and his HOF induction in 2005. They say “never meet your heroes,” but I still did. After weeks of badgering the Smokies PR person in 2009, I got to spend 10 minutes interviewing Ryne Sandberg and asking every question in my head

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

He's making the live long and prosper sign with both hands and a colorful rainbow arches between them.

Not to state the obvious, but none of them were sent to a terrorist prison in El Salvador. They all had lawyers, indictment by grand jury, a trial or a guilty plea where a judge ensured it was knowing & voluntary & access to an appeals process. In other words, all the hallmarks of due process.

Feel almost like I grew up with Richard Chamberlain as a cool substitute teacher. He starred or co-starred in so many books brought to the screen in the 70s and 80s. Made him a fixture in school for when the teacher needed a movie day. May his memory be a blessing.

Hope is a precious and powerful thing.
A picture of Fred Rogers in his signature cardigan (this one is red) smiling at the camera, appearing the change into more comfortable shows as he did in the PBS children’s show “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” for many years.
Beside Mr. Rogers is a quote that says “If you look for the helpers, you’ll know that there’s hope.”

It’s the final line of a thought from an interview where he reveals when he would see something scary as a boy, his mother would tell him to “look for the helpers” because there are always people helping.

The interview can be seen here:

It should be very clear to every Senate Democrat that any vote for Cloture will also be considered a vote for the bill. People aren’t going to be tricked with procedural games. They know exactly what is going on. Defend Medicaid. Vote NO on Cloture. NO on bill.

🚨 Everyone needs to call their Dem Senator right now. They are starting to cave. Tell them: 1. Vote NO on Cloture AND 2. Vote NO on the Republican spending bill. Don’t let them pivot to reconciliation. GOP doesn’t need Dem votes on that and they know it. TODAY is the showdown. 🤳🏽: (202) 224-3121

In times where joy and optimism can be hard to find, @joeposnanski.bsky.social’s amazing book on Buck O’Neil was a very welcome read. It had me laughing, feeling hope, and crying, all within paragraphs of each other.
The cover of a book. It shows an old style baseball field at the bottom, and a black and white image of Buck O’Neil at the top. O’Neil is perched on the top step of a baseball dugout, a serious look on his face, with his right hand on his hip and his left arm resting on his bent front knee. O’Neil’s jersey reads “Monarchs.”
The title is The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O’Neil’s America” by Joe Posnanski

It’s birthday tradition in my family to let the birthday person pick their dinner. Anything (within reason) goes. My baby boy said he wanted pizza. My pizza. Not the pizza from the (VERY good, imho) pizzeria in town. My heart grew so fast it made the Grinch look like a chump. 💗💗💗💗
