Chris D’Elia Instagram story screenshotting a text he sent: “Sebastian was hired to make a DIFFERENT show because raw dog was obv not... doing well I guess???
Do these comics speaking out think what they are doing is good? All them KNOW him LOL. Half of them have his number TEXT HIM ABOUT IT or even DM him if you have a problem with it. But nah, now a good dude and family man, is going to get so much unjust hate for something that probably has more to do with XM radio????? What is WRONG with comedians??? When a tv show with robots takes over show a time slot that originally was held by a show about dinosaurs they don't ADD dinosaurs they don't... add robots to the fuckin Dino show. This is NUTS they think they're being good to the working man. The world is a stage bro. What a joke.”Chris D’Elia Instagram story: “A coordinated public attack on one of the nicest dudes in comedy is astounding to me”

sure, he's right about that, but I don't think that's actually relevant to the analysis about racism. the height of "cancel culture" was during Trump's first term, not before, and it didn't stop people from electing Biden

in his podcast today Chris D'Elia says his manager prematurely committed him to the TPUSA event, whines about the backlash, says he'd do anything for a paycheck, even the Riyadh Comedy Festival, and complains about comics "who were head of the MeToo movement" but did the Riyadh Comedy Festival
Chris D'Elia (00:00):
So I haven't done work in Hollywood for six years it's been—and I get an offer from Turning Point USA, which to do—well, first of all, I don't really know what the offer is. They say, "Hey, you want to do comedy for our show?" And I go, "Yeah, I love doing comedy. Let me put you in touch with my manager." I put 'em in touch with my manager and then I was like, "What do they want me to do?" And he said, "They want you to do 20 minutes of comedy. You can roast them, whatever." I was like, "Oh yeah, maybe I'll do that." And one thing led to another to where my manager let them think yes, I was going to do it. And then it was posted that I was going to do it. And when it was posted, it was posted that it was going to be, like, Donald Trump Jr was going to be on the thing and all that. And I go, "Oh, what is this?" And I look at it and I was like, "Yo, I didn't even look at the contract yet." So it was a mixup that I was posted on this. And when I tell you people were coming for my head, I mean, they're like. First of all, there was no, "Hey, what's this all about?" It was only "Die bitch."

(01:34)
And I'm like, "Well, okay, hold on." First of all, the people trying to—and by the way, I know people are coming at Turning Point too because they're like, "You put him on the site prematurely, you shouldn't have done that." Just fucking shut up, dude. This was a simple, simple mistake, dude. And it's nobody's fault except probably my manager's. Okay? So you know what? I take responsibility actually, because I should have just—I'm so fucking goddamn aloof, dude. I just go, "What? I don't know. Maybe. Yeah, sounds fun. I want to make everybody happy." And then it gets announced that I'm gonna do 20 minutes of fucking roasting, I guess, in Reno. And I'm like, "Well, I don't want to do that." And then it's already up and out. And I go, "Why the fuck?" I say to my manager, "What the fuck?" And he's like," Oh, my bad."& I'm like, "All right, cool." & now everyone's like, "Fuck you, bro. You're the lowest of low. You're the scum of the earth. You're terrible." I got people telling me you're complicit in war crimes. I'm like, "Oh my God." Now granted, these people are mentally insane, but there are different levels of mentally insane that they are. There are the very batshit crazy people. That's fine. & do those people still get to you? Yeah, if there's enough of them. But then there are people who are kind of insane and they're like, "Look at you, you sell out." They offered me a lot of money. And I'm like, "Oh." In the beginning, that's what I saw. And I was like, "Oh, maybe I'll do the fucking shit. I'm not political. I just go off fucking roasting people. I don't give a shit." And in the back of my head, I was like, "Dude, you know what? Hollywood really is a bitch and they're shitty. And everyone shamed me out of Hollywood." So I'm like, "All right, I don't make money off that. So fuck it. Maybe I'll make money off this other thing." Because I go where the bag is, dude. Do you understand that? Do you understand that? Do you understand that, dude, I will go where the bag is? I am not political. Dude, if you had me, remember when I was making fun of all those comics that went to Saudi Arabia? By the way, where the fuck happened to them? Nobody gives a shit about that. They still go to their shows. And I'm not knocking all of the comics. I'm knocking the people who were the head of the MeToo movement and then went to Saudi Arabia and fucking went to do those shows. Y'all could go fuck yourself. Okay? I don't give a fuck. I don't talk about this shit. Everything's a joke. I don't stand for fucking free this, free that. Oh, this is a disgrace. Vote for this person, don't vote for that person. I'll go to Saudi Arabia. You know what I'm saying? Now, so I don't care. I would do a show for Barack Obama. I would do a show for fucking Hillary Clinton, JD Vance. I don't give a fuck, dude.

the implication here is that racism is not a significant problem, and to the extent that it is a problem, it's not really the fault of racists. I find this difficult to square with the actual state of the world we're living in
Halkias: That's also why you see people turn to fascism because Democrats weren't offering anything and Republicans were like, "Well, actually it's immigrants and gay people that are doing this." And if no one is saying anything else, no one is saying, "No, billionaires are doing it. No inequality is the problem." If no one is saying that, then if the two options are people that are different than you are causing this, or actually it's because you said the N word in a tweet in sixth grade, "This is why the world's bad." It's like neither those two things are good. Those are bad messages, but it's also like we have to be realistic here. The biggest problem is inequality and we should in the future curb that behavior.

I like that kids now are more with it than kids were when I was growing up, but we have to also be realistic. If our society did have these infrastructure racism problems, then yeah, when you were younger and didn't know any better, you were a part of that culture and you said some fucked up shit. Let's move towards like, "Hey, that's not cool anymore, and let's actually fix the real problems," which I think are all economic and it's all class. So that's what I think happened. And that's why in 2016 we got caught in this vortex where the Hillary Clinton campaign was offering pretty much nothing. It was like, "This will be symbolic, a woman," which again, all great stuff. We should have a woman president, it's embarrassing we didn't, but we should have a woman president that says like, "Hey, let's fix something instead of the whole culture being a little, it's just scolding with no results." And I think that kind of infected comedy a little bit.

Stavros Halkias consistently frames left-wing antiracist efforts -- cancel culture, implicitly -- as targeting people for dumb shit they said when they were young and didn't know better. it is a pretty convenient and disingenuous position, imo

Carlos Mencia, charged with felony tax evasion, tells the San Antonio Current he never evaded his taxes, and once he files the taxes he never filed, he'll be done evading his taxes www.sacurrent.com/news/comedia...
Q: It sounds like you want to take responsibility, but you also pled not guilty to the charges, right?

A: I never evaded. I filled out my 1099s everywhere I went. I legit didn’t have enough money to cover my bases. I knew this would happen. But within the next couple of weeks, all those tax years are going to be filed. Once those tax years are filed, there’s no more evasion. It’s kind of like they’re accusing me of murdering somebody, but the person is still alive. I’m just going to have to pay whatever fines … and then it’ll go away. At the end of the day, they did the right thing.

other disturbing thing is that Netflix has introduced him to a whole new set of fans who missed the 2019 stuff — I read a thread by someone who went to his last Philly gig because her husband likes Tires, and they were both surprised to see guys in nazi gear and his openers telling racist jokes

Gillis is baffling. He has an appreciation for history and a mind for comedy. But his genuine embrace of the right being clumsily framed as an act of spite is cowardly. He brays about being politically atheist, but it’s so disingenuous. Shane’s an asshole troll who knows better but doesn’t care.

Nailed it. Manages a persona well, and I guess he can write a bit. Both can be true but, personally and professionally, his life is “trigger>escape via plausible deniability” while regularly being triggered into little boy rants himself (which he tries laughing off after because he’s a chickenshit)
