I have no idea how to *say* this any more. It was all public. Marina was very clear. Some of us really screamed about it, were forced to coach one another through being retraumatized as those screams got their mixed reception. There were so many tears.

I’ve been making videos for almost 7 years now & I have never, not once, earned the minimum taxable income. In my best year, I still made less than half the minimum wage (all revenue streams including Patreon). I was really hoping this one would bring in some cash before the slow season 💀

But just in case you were worried, YouTube pays fractions of cents for each individual watch, that most of our videos are demonitised (this one was at real risk of being age-gated too). It's a well researched video and I'm proud of it, but mostly it's there to help people feel better.

Do NOT respond to this person, who was probably reasonably triggered, but just to say: I don't think it's gross to repost the video we made on sexual assault and restorative justice, given that's what this discussion is about. I do think it's upsetting that I have so many opportunities to do so.

Bluesky comment: Do you not find it kinda fucking gross to constantly plug your own work whenever something like this happens? Maybe youre just that in love with your own views that you feel they just MUST be heard but it comes across as seriously grifty.

It's because I wrote a thread detailing my thoughts and then ended up deleting it because the video is more eloquent and has citations. I don't find it gross so much as I'm hopeful that people are comforted from it since it's an exploration of how to deal with SA. You don't have to watch though.

A lot of the most poignant feelings of betrayal here do come from some of the particular choices he made with his platform. Like agreeing to consult on the Silent Hill 2 remake, a game in part about sexual assault, without disclosing his history.

Since so much of it is out there at the moment…

I’ve seen the take that rape is “a fate worse than death” a lot. This is usually from well-meaning people who want SA to be taken as seriously as it should be in a society that regularly sacrifices victims at the altars of Men With Bright Futures.

But it’s wrong. And it’s damaging and dangerous for victims to hear. You are not better off dead than raped.

After your assault, you’ll navigate the feelings of betrayal and anger and hurt. You may experience suicidal ideation. You probably will. But you are not better off dead than raped.

There is a whole life you will live after SA. It may be different than the life you once saw stretch out before you, but it’s no less valuable. You will heal and grow and change. You will know more happiness than you could ever imagine from that dark, angry, fearful place you once inhabited.

Your life has beauty and value and it is bigger than what SA took from you.

She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Structural changes like mandatory sick leave are important, but we can't abdicate all personal responsibility either. In Japan my coworker came to work with the flu and just slept on his desk masked up and none of us got it. We can care for each other even when structures are refusing to change.
