I'm currently prepping a lesson for writing fellows on how to support student researchers and was looking to this thread for inspiration for various anti-AI talking points, so thanks for putting it all together (I'll be sharing with some faculty as well)

they don't actually KNOW what their topic is, why they "chose" it, and what they want to find. I recently worked with a student who was dead-set on narrowing the focus of their research by looking into a 20-year-old apartment development in a wealthy suburb... because that's what ChatGPT recommended

I just came to your profile looking for this thread because I have been thinking about it since you first posted it (and trying to write out my own thoughts). I keep encountering students who show up for research appointments with genAI-generated topics/questions and we immediately get stuck because

Please remember that for every VE Schwab and Stephen King, there are a lot of banned Black, queer, and POC writers you've never heard of, to whom it is maybe not a badge of honor but a denial of their voice. Being banned is not a marketing opportunity, unless one is already rich.

Of all the things that make TSA unamiable, the fact that agents are allowed to sit is nowhere near the list.

I do remember my (entirely unimpressive) SAT score, but in the way I remember the combination for my mailbox in college; I don't *want* to be wasting brain space on this, but I do not appear to have that option.

One of the things that is going to change is that we’re never ever again going to be able to be dominated by public officials who tell us, ‘Trust the experts,’” Mr. Kennedy said during the Tuesday session.

“If somebody tells you, ‘Masks work, trust the experts,’ A.I. may tell you otherwise,” he added. “If somebody tells you, ‘Social distancing works, trust the experts,’ A.I. may correct that. And if somebody tells you that a vaccine will prevent transmission and infection, or you need to take it to protect your grandmother, A.I. may say it actually doesn’t do that.”

The economists and boring people who study cash flow are saying: AI is a bubble, its burst is imminent, and it's going to wash away most of economic growth of the last decade when it happens. The historians are saying: What they said. Don't ask AI how to make guillotines. Use primary sources.

I have watched the language around education become increasingly transactional over the course of my career and this feels like its natural endpoint. It's as if they watched the "I know kung fu" scene from the Matrix and said "we can do that"
