And all done. A good night and engaged audience. Thoughtful questions and clearly interested in the answers. Some additional chat with candidates as the chairs being stacked.

Last q: Party vote or candidate vote? Alliance, Lab, Nat = both. Opp and NZF = party vote. Green = party vote Green to get me in eith 16% and maybe 4 Green MPs for Ōtautahi and give Rata your candidate vote.

Nat - we already have rules. Lab - no specific policy on donations but regulate lobbyists. Green - it's a serious threat to democracy. Cap donations, lobbyists register. Alliance - democracy at risk, lots of policy. 2/2

Last q on political donations: Opp - clean up politics inc donations and lobbyists. NZF - no new regulations. A laugh when he said NZF don't get influenced by donations. 1/2

Q on engaging young people to vote. Opp - bring back polling day enrolment. NZF - more referenda. Nat - if own a home will vote. Lab - make voting 16 alongside civics ed. Green/Alliance - what Lab and Opp said.

Not getting to outline all questions, sorry. Currently on housing density. Lab n Green = density close to central city, address Air BnB. Nat = out in greenfields as well as up. NZF = out and up. Opp, density better than sprawl over versatile soils.

Climate Change Com Q: Opp = take it seriously. NZF = leave the Paris Agreement. Nat = we'll meet targets early. Lab = can't keep selling houses to each other if we're underwater. Green = need to do fair share and take the lead as we're running out if time. Alnc = ball dropped by govt n MfE gone.

Do you support Fast Track processes without community input *around Avonhead development)? Alliance, Greens, Labour, Opp = no. National, NZF = it's a process and should run its course. Nat = it does have consultation.

NZF 'Treaty Partnership' invented by activist judges and no such thing as the 'principles'. (Disappointing as he's a final year law student). Greens n Lab to repeal Reg Standards Act.

First question on the Doors to Dignity campaign and housing for seniors in Ilam were rents are the same as the pension. Greens, Alliance and Lab = build more community housing. Nat, NZF mentioned more homes but not govt ones. Opp said KO needs to build right type. Only Green knew of the campaign.

Two candidates are still students at UC - Labour and NZF. He's the second very young male standing for NZF i e seen this election, still seems odd to me as NZF seem so much an older persons' vibe.

Labour then Greens and now the Alliance (all 5m). Act are a no-show and while Opportunity don't have an electorate candidate, they're allowed a 3m intro.

Doing my civic duty at the Ilam meet the candidates meeting. Moderator clear it's not a debate. Church hall is nearly full, though average age is high. NZF the National candidates so far.

Agree re some of the candidate non-selections, but it's still the most diverse line up of any of the parties, so not by any means a move to be 'mainstream'

I'm also interested in how many put themselves up for candidate selection at local branches and lost out to men due to bias etc. We'll never know, but it'd be interesting to see if fewer stood and if the % selected dropped too.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

This piece absolutely nails it and is a must read. This paragraph brought me to a standstill because it's also how we've gone from broad acceptance of trans people to journalists including comment from "gender criticals" fighting for "common sense" on every trans story.
Another layer of consideration: even if this is a genuine representation of a plethora of parental voices, we should consider also how it can be deployed in media disputes going forward. It is expressly positioned as a voice for parents, in opposition to teachers or public servants. What this will mean in practice, it seems likely, is that every time something new is introduced to the education system, the media will balance out the teacher or ministry explanation with a Parents Alliance reply. Detailed research and evidence-based conclusions will be held to the standard of
"common sense". And that, de facto, will serve the greater project of the right, undermining the idea of government itself.

ACT getting 5x as much in donations as the Green party but still polling at about 2/3 of the Greens really shows how hard right wingers have to work for people to actually like them. Imagine if a left wing party had that kind of money. Imagine if right wingers couldn't splurge money like that.

Peters can bluster all he likes but I won't stop fighting for all trans people's right to bodily autonomy and self determination, including trans kids, and I've got a lot more years left on the clock than he does. If he thinks he can touch the conversion practices ban he's in for a fight. Tick tock!

McKenzie Scott is a good case study that showcases we should tax the hell out of billionaires. She got $36billion, has given away like $25-$26billion and she is still worth around $35billion. There’s no reason for this to be happening while people are starving.
