This is an important point that it seems like a lot of people don't fully grasp. We don't impose *legal* penalties until something is proved to appropriate standards in a court case. But we don't need legal findings to make judgements like "I don't trust him" and vote for someone else.

The reason Jeffries is visibly taking this so personally, by the way, is less about particular policies (though there are certainly differences) and more that Mamdani and the DSA are fucking with the existing NYC Democratic machine. That said machine is a rusted out hulk is neither here nor there

Dolan went on WFAN not only to announce that the Knicks will visit Trump (with the unspoken implication that players who don't want to go will be coerced into going) but also that he refuses to pay the 2nd apron tax to keep the team together. He didn't let success change him.

Dolan is in that category with Trump of people who loathe real NYC but love a fictional white mobster version where the people they perceive themselves to be are always on top and ooze that sentiment at every opportunity.

But like most publishing terms that are thrown around, it's slicing an onion in a way that most readers don't. A Gillian Flynn reader can also read a Patricia Cornwell novel and see them both as suspense, even though one would be classified as upmarket and the other as commercial.

I'm going to spare you my soapbox about women's fiction since there's a character limit here, but "up" is in opposition to "down" as in downmarket, so in general you can say they are plot driven books that have a depth of writing and character that more traditional commercial fiction might not.

For me, the question isn’t whether generating art with AI is good or bad. It’s just definitionally impossible. Art is what humans create to express the nonliteral. An algorithm, however much data it has, has no sense of the nonliteral. It might make something that pleases you, but it can’t make art.
