12 June 1656 #OTD Alice Thornton's daughter Katherine was born at Hipswell Hall, where the family were then living. Katherine was one of the three of Thornton's nine children to survive childhood. She married Thomas Purchas and, after his death, Robert Danby and died in 1726. #EarlyModern 🗃️

I just reached the peak of my powers. I judged the Medieval Christmas Bake-off at the Centre for Medieval Studies. The showstopper was a stupendous recreation of the Ruthwell Cross in gingerbread and edible ink. This Wound in the Side of Christ won best for … flavour … hmmm

Did you know that some of the oak that built the Hall came from the Forest of Galtres? Never heard of it? The forest covered 100,000 acres and encompassed 60 villages, however deforestation led to its disappearance by 1629. It was said the oak was of better quality than that of Sherwood Forest! 🌳
