Cowboys again. This time one of our boys has lost his boots. Standing in a field of long grass the cowboy points towards the ground and shouts back to his colleague, “Lil bone people got muh boots.” This makes no sense to the other cowboy who sits atop his horse away from the action. He responds, “Lil wut?” Sure enough in the foreground we see a squad of little bone people scampering through the grass with the stolen cowboy boots. They’re thrilled. How the bone people got the boots off the cowboy is unclear.

Artist’s note: I tend to draw drawings from the same perspective (straight on) most of the time. This idea came about when I was goofin around trying to draw a character from a lower angle. I like that the story unfolds with the foreground, mid-ground, and background all working together. There’s a draft of this one included in the Spooky Pants book. Coming out next week!

A “solution” that skips to the end as quick as possible isn’t a solution. It’s a robbery. It’s a corruption of the pathways of judgment. It’s a betrayal of process and skill. And it’s funny how often it’s prioritized to do that skipping so someone entirely uniformed and unskilled can 👍👎 the project

I think there’s this kind of faith that grows as skills develop where you can see a rough drawing or thumbnail and go “oh yeah this is gonna be a good one”. You’ve got belief and confidence it’ll prolly be cool when it’s further along, and if not that you’ll figure it out all the same.

In a lot of things you often don’t need a polished thing to interact with for a LONG time. You’re better with pencil sketches and imagination filling it in. The reason you don’t “just animate it” isn’t just the cost of time or money it’s you gotta figure out what’s worth animating first.

A lot of work is decisions and judgment and a lot of projects are a lot of both before or beyond execution and implementation. And when you give up judgment and decisions to an automated system you just end up with hifi versions of concepts that should have died along the way.

This is also extremely common now in higher ed for faculty, more recently staff, and even at times STUDENTS. (with some… exceptions) It’s also super common in any kind of tech/code/design job too. I don’t think people realize how much these clauses kill people’s ability to make art of their own!

"you can just stream it!" Yeah... that's not media or art preservation, that's just media locked behind a service that can vanish it at anytime too! I think streaming platforms should have to also keep equivalent in print media active (similar to the cable/antenna setup years ago).

I know everything is temporary and the moon is a big egg and whatever, but I've been sad lately at how much art is just slipping "out of print" and being essentially lost. The new Gravity Falls art book dropped recently (its marvelous), but the discs stopped being made in 2023. It's just... gone 😔
