Lately, I've been thinking a lot about how if we want things to be better we gotta have people willing to try new shapes of interaction. The last decade of "social media" has landed us off a cliff, and Dan really nails the feeling here. I am tired. I am SO tired, and I think I need to blog again.

Over the next year I expect Star Trek, Superman, Batman, and all manner of narrative IP to start shifting into more fascist apologia if this merger fully goes through; particularly with where the financing is coming from. Lotta things getting shelved, lotta CBS-level internal sabotage. Gonna be bad.

A few years ago I worked up a “social RSS” spec I was toying around with that tried to interrogate and reconsider some of the things that made RSS great and the things that undermined it—and then I kinda set it aside with the web being so heartbreaking of late. I dunno, maybe I should resume.

Something I would wonder and look into if I was on Tapas is if my use of it as a host in their TOS and/or publishing agreement granted licensing to my comics in such a way that as they pivot they can take all hosted comics and use that as the base for a new “AI” model of sorts?

And (no shade at Dan) don’t forget one big way you can support isn’t only giving money to indie creators (which you should) it’s also supporting the systems (laws, policies, regulations, etc) that create a more sustainable and thriving capacity to go indie in the first place!

If you really wanted to "democratize art", you wouldn't be supporting larger driving forces that are making art supplies skyrocket in price and causing supply shortages from global climate disasters and geopolitical political strategies of "everyone in charge is 12".

You do not need to explain, to Queer or Black or Disabled people in America, that you can't always have a perfect thing. That is not news to us. You are not providing new information. It is the height of arrogance to assume that's not already part of our understanding of the world.

The greater forces didn’t start recently, but this chapter certainly began in 2013. If there’s truth to be found about the roots of the current rot, that year holds a lot of answers and a lot more questions.

I remain unconvinced model training is reasonably “fair use”. Every determination I’ve encountered is from a hype person, a vibeLARPER, or someone lacking adequate expertise to understand what’s going on at the technical layer. The transformative claims could just as easily apply to compression?!

IANAL, but I work with a lot of copyright experts and just as an FYI. AFAIK in the US (varies a lot around the world) a work is not copyrighted at publication but at CREATION. It is NOT required to be registered at all, BUT you’ll do better in court if you do (and have more legal recourse options)
