The Ford govt is actually making stealth cuts to education funding. “... the FAO estimates that real provincial operating funding to school boards will decrease to $15,074 per student in 2026-27, $14,850 per student in 2027‑28 and $14,775 per student in 2028-29.” #OntEd #OnPoli

Core education funding — the province's main funding envelope for school boards to support day-to-day classroom operations, staffing and student services — is set to rise by $317.6 million in 2026-27.
The Trillium has learned $234.2 million of that increase, about 74 per cent, comes from existing education dollars being shifted from other funding envelopes.
So, while per-student funding is set to rise by $356 this year, only $93 of that increase is new money — well below inflation.

PRESS RELEASE: TDSB parents are demanding accountability and transparency from the Supervisor and the Minister on the 2026-2027 TDSB budget. #onted #onpoli #topoli
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - JUNE 24, 2026
TDSB PARENTS DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY ON NEW BUDGET
Toronto, ON - Parents are demanding accountability and transparency from the Supervisor and the Education Minister regarding the 2026-2027 TDSB Budget.
At a June 9th Parent Involvement Advisory Committee (PIAC) Meeting, TDSB staff presented a high-level overview of the Ministry of Education's provincial funding (Core Education funding) and an incomplete picture of the 2026-2027 TDSB budget. This presentation did not include many key components that would typically be provided to the public. With the budget deadline of June 30th, there are many unanswered questions raising concerns about funding for the year ahead.
"As a parent of students in high school, I have been through many budget cycles over the years.
Being able to understand the budget priorities and delegate on behalf of the needs of my community has allowed for important perspectives and understanding of the needs of different communities. Not having the data to understand the cuts that are coming is frustrating and confusing. Parents have lost their voice and can no longer advocate for the needs of their schools. This is wrong." Jen Volk - TEAN Member
"As a parent of a daughter at a Model School, hearing TDSB staff openly admit they are dismantling this 20+-year program without reviewing data, conducting assessments, or consulting parents blew my mind. This program builds community connections, funds field trips, improves achievement and graduation rates - it provides the opportunities our kids need to succeed! They are scrapping a program for 50,000 of Toronto's most underserved students based on nothing but vibes. Minister Calandra and his hand-picked supervisor Rohit Gupta are abandoning our kids, replacing a proven equity program with empty rhetoric and zero accountability." - Omar Khan - TDSB Parent
"First it was 5,000 fewer students. Now it's 8,000. The TDSB is doubling down on a declining enrolment narrative whil…
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - JUNE 24, 2026

TEAN is encouraging families to call the Premier's Office at 416-325-1941, citing the Supervisor's ineffectiveness and the Minister of Education's unwillingness to meet with them or listen to local parents' concerns. And to demand proper funding for education.

ABOUT TEAN: Toronto Education Advocacy Network (TEAN) is a parent-led network advocating for a well-funded, equitable, inclusive, public education system for all in Ontario.A school board's budget reflects the needs and priorities of the local education system and must be informed by its students, families, and community. The budget process must:
• Allow time and space for meaningful public consultation on specific budget items and potential program changes, not just Ministry priorities and required spending.
• Provide detailed information and data about enrolment, budget, expenses, and funding gaps (structural and local decision)
• Provide opportunities for the parent and caregiver community to delegate and give input into local programs and spending, not just general budget priorities
• Provide opportunities for trustees to consult with their communities on program and spending priorities. In addition to budget surveys, trustees held webinars and town hall meetings to fully inform constituents and allow exploration and discussion. Dissemination of information to school councils allows for each school community to engage in education and school needs.
Here is what we know about the 2026-2026 TDSB Budget:
• Despite devastating staff and program cuts, the budget is still not balanced, and as was stated by staff, likely will not be balanced by the Ministry's June 30th deadline. (because, as we already know, the government has chosen to provide less funding than it costs to run the board)
• Per student annual funding for the TDSB was not provided, nor answered when directly asked (this should be publicly available), though we know from media reporting that Core Education funding has only increased provincially by 1% over 2025-26, which is well below inflation.
• Details of the funding for the TDSB under each Core Ed category was not provided. Gaps in funding between statutory expenses (e.g. salaries and wages, or CPP and El premiums) and Core Ed funding were not provided. Impacts to programs, levels of service, and changes to school/student supports for the 2026-27 school year were not provided. There are significant, critical supports fo…
• Claims all staffing reductions have been notified, but there have been no notifications to staff or the public regarding non-unionized positions that are being cut.
Claims parents were consulted despite a poorly designed, ableist, and limited budget survey completed by only approx 2% of TDSB families
