I jumped at the opportunity to see BLACK ZOMBIE tonight. Essential and profound. The first three Romero zombie movies are as necessary to me as air, but this made me reconsider them and the whole damn genre. More importantly, it educated me about Haiti and its history; both horrific and triumphant.

This is one of the best documentaries that I've seen in a very long time. It balances poetic storytelling with expository heft. Even if you know the historical arc, this film likely adds depth to your cultural analysis of who is a zombie and why we make zombies.

If Xavier Burgin's Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror is the equivalent of a survey course you might take freshman year at college, Maya Annik Bedward's Black Zombie is the kind of class you take junior year that makes you consider going to grad school for this stuff. The film begins, as many of these documentaries about film do, with a montage of moments (spanning the 1920s to the 2020s) that attempt to convince you why you should care about this particular cultural history and its place in the pop culture landscape today.
