HER PRIVATE HELL: Classic Refn in its surrealistic, neon-streaked fugue of seduction and violence, the connective tissue binding narrative strands remaining dreamily opaque until the film’s third act brings them together in gory, melodramatic fashion. More mournful than it is hopeful, a death dream.

THE WAILING: Na’s bumbling-cop mystery fades into a scarier sense of encroaching doom and helplessness. A huge reason the film works as much as it does is that Kwak Do-won carries a massive arc while maintaining a look of beleaguered horror that anticipates and mirrors the audience’s.
