‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Review: Takashi Yamazaki Delivers Another Satisfying Kaiju Monster Romp [NYFF]
Takashi Yamazaki stole hearts worldwide in 2023 with “Godzilla Minus One,” which went on to take the Oscars by storm, earning the franchise its first nomination and win for Best Visual Effects. (Carrying around the little Godzilla action figure everywhere only further endeared him to fans.) On a budget of just $10 million, a mere fraction of their franchise competition’s resources, his team of effects artists created a monster that felt believable and real. Some documentaries observe their subjects, some documentaries interrogate them, and then there is “You Can See Everything,” Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s surreal, extraordinary new Elizabeth Holmes film, a work that keeps destabilizing the very idea that observation can ever produce something as reassuring as objective truth. So slippery, funny, unnerving, and formally audacious, it can leave you so disoriented you feel as if you’ve been thrown through the looking glass. Kathleen Kennedy Says George Lucas Only Left “A Couple Of Paragraphs” For His ‘Star Wars’ Sequel Trilogy
For years, George Lucas has maintained that when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, he wasn’t finished with “Star Wars.” He still intended to make another trilogy, and just last month told CBS Sunday Morning that walking away from filmmaking meant leaving “three more ‘Star Wars’” movies behind. As The Playlist reported, he ultimately chose family and the long-gestating Lucas Museum over spending another decade making Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. October’s Must-Watch Movies, From ‘Digger’ & ‘The Social Reckoning’ To ‘Clayface’ & ‘Possible Love’
Calling October the beginning of awards season almost feels quaint. The month now has to accommodate prestige dramas, international festival winners, streaming swings, horror movies, IP plays, documentaries, and the kind of star-driven adult films Hollywood supposedly no longer makes. October 2026 has all of them, often arriving on the same weekend. Tom Cruise finally escapes the franchise machine for Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Aaron Sorkin returns to Facebook without David Fincher, Lee Chang-dong releases his first feature since “Burning,” and Paweł Pawlikowski finally follows “Cold War.” New films from Cristian Mungiu, Ben Affleck, Chris Rock, Romain Gavras, Marie Kreutzer, Alex Gibney, Taika Waititi, Anton Corbijn, and Rachel Morrison also arrive, alongside studio swings like “Street Fighter” and DC Studios’ grotesque-looking “Clayface.” READ MORE: 88 Must-See Movies This Fall: ‘Dune: Part Three,’ ‘Digger,’ ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ ‘The Adventures Of Cliff Booth’ & More “Digger” After spending much of the last decade saving the world as Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise gets to help destroy it instead. Everyone in “East of Eden” carries something heavy, and the weight of those burdens feels almost biblical. Shame, resentment, violence, abandonment. They are the failures, mistakes, and wounds parents pass down to their children, and the equally terrible things those children sometimes carry into adulthood. Zoe Kazan’s magnificent, emotionally intelligent adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel understands that family history never simply disappears. The harder question—and the one this wrenching, beautifully made series keeps returning to—is what we choose to do with everything we inherit. The story behind MGM+’s “American Hostage” is both absolutely bonkers and, even almost 50 years later, strangely relatable. In 1977, Indianapolis man Tony Kiritsis walked into mortgage broker Richard “Dick” Hall’s office, put a sawed-off shotgun to his head, and connected it to Hall’s neck with a dead man’s wire. From there, he marched Hall through the streets, held him hostage for 63 hours, and demanded $5 million, immunity from prosecution, and an apology. ‘Animals’: Ben Affleck Says He Used AI “For Lots Of Things” On His New Movie But Won’t Say What

As for what things in particular? Affleck isn’t telling, and likened revealing how he used AI on the film to a stage magician revealing their tricks before a show. In the modern era of superhero and genre filmmaking, a huge trend is seeing actors and actresses getting into extreme shape for roles, which can feel like overnight, and while many folks have been skeptical about how they were able to achieve those statuesque bodies, actor Sly Stallone (“Tulsa King”) isn’t convinced they’re doing it strictly by diet and exercise alone. He’s making the claim that it’s happening with extra help from steroids. For a movie that never made it in front of cameras, Luca Guadagnino’s “Sgt. Rock” got surprisingly close. Screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes now says the abandoned DC Studios project had already moved “more or less” into prep when it suddenly fell apart, while a new GQ profile on Mike Faist and his upcoming “East of Eden” role confirms (essentially, anyhow) the “Challengers” actor had joined Guadagnino’s planned cast.
