Make friends with "unproductive" conversations. You can start a meeting with a statement about needing unproductive time to build community together, or for the need to model what it means to unwind the expectations of productivity. lesscomputer.ca/direct-the-c...

So much comes down to a failure to articulate *what* exactly people think is "broken" about our public institutions and *why* or *how* they got that way - combined with almost purposeful ignorance of what those institutions are meant to do in the first place.

Also... it's always stupid to antagonize the civil service. They serve the country in a way that politicians do not - the oath is not to the vagaries of the government of the day, but to faithful public stewardship. And the vast majority of 'biz whiz kids' flame out against the realities of the job.

The operational backbone of Canadian government & academia exists on Microsoft Google AWS infrastructure but instead of a serious conversation about building foundations for public interest digital infra we are much more fixated on the hot shiny AI toys

I really do think tech crossed a line at some point between "helping you do the things you want to do" on the one hand, and "helping you do the things tech wants you to do" on the other. At this point, we're all contorting ourselves to live how the tech industry thinks we should be living.

The "AI is coming for jobs" narrative contributes to a scarcity mindset that destroys worker solidarity. I think we can look at anti-trust, tax policy, regulation, consumer protection, labor rights, and rights to housing, healthcare, childcare, and transportation without mentioning "AI" at all.

There is obviously a whole body of scholarship pointing in this direction so forgive me for saying something so obvious but the media needs to treat tech executives like the leaders of hostile governments because that is exactly what they are

context. sentiment. inferences. People seriously cannot do these things anymore. That’s why they angrily demand you spell out every joke, every reference, super duper promise you mean something only this one prescribed way. They cannot do it for themselves or tolerate the any ambiguity.

Spoke to an infectious disease doctor and apparently it’s actually more effective to get it later (the immunity wanes after a while) so we get full coverage when the worst of the infections (December-March) are hitting. Getting it earlier often requires a booster later in the season.

There‘s much to appreciate in Mamdani, but his insistence that culture isn’t a privilege of the rich is one of his strengths. It is reminiscent of how unions and the government treated it in the 1930s -art for the masses - paintings, music, opera, theater - democracy for all.

Every time I get an email from an “AI” inviting me to their new platform, not only do I block/report, I also put a hex on the human who released it into the wild. You’re gonna have toes growing out of your ears and everything you put in your mouth will taste like soap. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Allowing the most powerful segment of society to opt out of public services inevitably makes public services worse. This is why the existence of private schools inevitably makes public schools worse. A simple fact that seems hard for many to admit. www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/private-sc...

Blogs so didn't suck at scale that they, arguably and defensibly, ate the news environment and publishing. We are still living in the age of the blogger, present company included. To be clear. Your influencer/independent journo/networked politico etc etc -- blogging.
