I was perfectly alive at that moment. I was perfectly alive and writing. Time had already passed for me, and events were piling up. It was after Paris and before the cosmos. It was a doldrum, perhaps, but one in which a complete self went about its complete days.

How are you doing? I find myself lingering on the dark edge of the news, considering the relation of history to the present moment. At the same time I’ve been sitting with a koan I love, Dongshan’s “No Grass” from the Book of Serenity. salrandolph.substack.com/p/on-the-dar...

I love New York Fashion Week. Just as fall is showing its teeth, runways are filled with spring looks. Are we coming or going? Do we spring forward or fall back? This was written under the influence of runway walks, Persephone’s descent, poet H. D.’s wartime writings, and Joseph Campbell.

A few days ago I had a sudden, unexpected, vivid longing to be standing in Walter de Maria’s The Lightning Field. Was it a wish to time-travel backwards into memory, or the intimation of a future I haven’t made any plans for? I don’t know! open.substack.com/pub/salrando...

I immediately thought of Karen Armstrong’s book on the Axial Age, The Great Transformation (about the era when many of the world’s great religions got their start). I really enjoyed it.

End of summer, beginning of autumn; strong sun and cool air; loss and hopefulness. All of the distances in myself are pressed together. As a friend recently reminded me, a commonality or connection can be found between any two things, no matter how unlike they may seem at first glance.

Monkey Notes It’s a black monkey, the feeling I mean…
Monkey Notes
It’s a black monkey, the feeling I mean, the feeling of picking at something, the way the light falls in pure absorption. Come here, monkey. Come tell me what you know. How many days did you eat fruit, and what came and went in your heart. Are you night, coming for me? Are you the very nature of a question? The question is a thorn, and the thorn is a tangle. You can see the skin of me, my forehead, my lips, my neck. The bareness is perhaps a sorrow, perhaps a pain. The thorn is a judgment that pierces the words of the text. The gaze does not know me, does not wish to know me. Monkey, are you a cat? Monkey do you remember your childhood? Pain, it seems, is a kind of disappointment. Disappointment is a familiar pain. Pain is a kind of absorption. Absorption is a kind of wanting. Wanting wants wanting.

The books are shelved as he left them, using Eco’s “good neighbor” policy, and this is said to have helped him make unexpected connections. It also seems to me to hint at connections he made or hoped to make in work he may have left finished, a map to ideas he was still having. A profound honor.

Welcome to my hot classics summer. Iʻve had Homer in my ears, and Virgil and Shakespeare. Such a confusion of glories, such poetry, such violence! Iʻm driving under the influence of all of them, but whenever Caesar comes, for me itʻs not only Julius who appears, but also Gertrude Stein.
