A moonlit scene in the forest with a small river and many trees in the background. In the foreground is a large tree surrounded by woodland fairies, some still on the ground, some in flight. The bark of the tree has split open and a fairy appears through it.

Dishwasher Blues

I call them nothingdays. You get up
just to go to sleep again. What to do
until the pills kick in? Doomscroll,
Dead Sea Scrolls, prophecies. Stale
dreams. Schroedinger’s sanity. You can’t
sit still and stare into the abyss for too long
because you forgot to fill
the Ritalin prescription.
The fever sweats you out. A ring of salt
around your sickbed, where you huddle
like a dethroned king overlooking
the descent of his empire into waste.
A long night has come to greet you, your name
is impending doom.

Yesterday’s pizza crusts, bent spoons,
tea leaves, and coffee grounds.
Trash, trash, trash.

You have seen the future and you want
no part of it. All you are

is either past
or the desperate grief of a now

that won’t end.

Hymnal for Edvard

Small magics are afoot, strange alchemies
turning the sparrows into soothsayers.
The undertaker sheds his soot-black jacket,
blows the dust off the oaken coffin lid. Planting
flowers into the womb of earth; bluebells, hyacinths,
the old gray widow. They will come again next year
because they always do. Because they know
no other way but up up up, daffodils raising their heads
toward the sulfur-pheasant sun. A shovel that gleams golden
in the noon-light, a spasmic stirring of wings
in your full belly’s aviary. Bees sweeping out
their honeycombs with spidery twig-haired brooms.
Roadkill unfolds itself from the warming asphalt like tulips,
innards flapping petal-like in the mild March breeze.
Sap, blood, and dew clot into sonnets
on the meadow of our wet pink tongues.
Our breath is enough to make us holy, our blood-
scorched palms always grasping for something,
our cruel exalted wants. How magnificent is our fallibility,
our bodies that vessel the light. Frail but feral as foxes,
we climb on the highest cherry tree branches
to swallow big gulps of the sky.
We stretch our limbs heavenwards always, even from
the sepulcher below. Where we stick our roots is a pear tree
orchard that never runs out of fruit. Who knows
where they end, if ever. Spring days, lambed love,
the apple core of ourselves — these things don’t perish but ripen
buried under moon and mud. Worms and saplings, the red
breast of a robin feasted upon by ants. Bones that remember
they were forged to soar. Mushrooms pushing
through a corpse’s eye, violets crowning the guts.
The language of spring is persistence, a reawakening
of rot into bloom. A sempiternal offering of trust
to be carried by wind and wing. The stubborn belief of a calf
to always be born head-first.
From deep beneath, the lovely dead
tickle the crocus shoots out of the dampened soil,
coax the grass to sprout. Blackbirds in the ruined church spires,
mouths that know nothing but song. You look into the bell
of a …

Lolita in Starlight

He melts in my mouth and I swallow
everything, everything, everything.
Like stracciatella ice cream
or one of those pills. Like a communion
wafer. Cherries and cyanide. I kneel. I pray.
I worship.
Most of the time, I beg.
Sometimes I bite
with my itty-bitty teeth
and then he punishes me swiftly
like one would a naughty dog.
He stops petting, he tightens the leash.
Constricts the collar. And I will whimper
back fast to the altar of his hand
even when it’s shaped like a fist.
Because he shows me the way
from hideousness to holiness,
from rage to revelation,
from schoolgirl to seer.
A bird in a tight hand, squeezed like a doll.
Look at where the worms are squirming,
open your mouth. He teaches me
all the things
I never knew how
and I finally learned that devourment
is just another word for love.
Nymphet to nightingale,
scarlet to saint.
He calls me Lolita
and means stupid and small.
Whatever gets me closer
to the loins of an angel,
whatever gets me farther
away from myself.
He tells me what words to put on my tongue
and they writhe like lilacs and moths.
How nice it is to be nothing, nothing
at all. All my thoughts escape like incense
and I swirl like smoke from his cigarettes.
He is divine through my heart-shaped glasses. He is God between my thighs.
I’m sweet like strawberry soda
laced with sacrilege and sickness.
I’m pretty like a bad bruise, darling
like drugs. I go deep like a fresh wound.
I nest in the flesh. I never heal up.
I’m contagious. I want it
in your blood.
The brain melts into slush. Maggot pink
sorbet.
As gentle as morphine,
as hard as a kiss.

her eyes were a question mark, her mouth
a semi-colon.

every kiss said,
this is not over yet.

this is a myth
i’ll continue to tell
even when no one else
believes in it.

around the harvest fires
with my throat bound with incense
and antlered vows.

they think me insane
because they cannot hear
the fables the foxes
and wrens sing into my ear

when the night sky hums and augurs
its moonstruck prophecies.

in spit-verse and split lip,
cracked tooth and tongue

to the sacred beat of rugged breaths,
in lingering twilight sighs.

every sinew you touch
pulsates like a harp:
every legend we speak
could birth a splinter of truth
if you just dream it harder,
lamb a gospel and a god.

for the rest of my life
i’ll put you at the end of every sentence
only to add another one behind it:

always,
one more poem.

The Happiness of Mourning Doves

The sky is darkening and yet the dove
always finds its nest. Every pencil-stroke of wing
is a refusal to end this story,
is a sudden feathered match
torched against the night. A word only whispered
but meant as a covenant. The unfinished bird-spine of a poem
and yet a declaration of war against silence.
A pinprick
of stolen half-light, a promise in a raspy throat. Sometimes, the hobble of a dove
is the stride of a king. And sometimes
that has to be enough.

The way a lighthouse sweeps the coast
even when the horizon hides the ship in its mouth.

Someone
still looking out for you. Someone
with their arms open wide
even when you get lost. When God made you,
he conceived of the sea.

Even twigs
can be arranged into cathedrals.
Maybe even skin and bones.
With the small blue veins under your wrist
becoming every river I’ll ever follow.
Your north star heart. The sacred hairs
on the back of your neck, listening,
as if the sky itself told you its secrets.

Even I
could be someone
if you imagined me.

Hands that draw maps on skin
of places that haven’t been dreamed yet.
Eventually, a palm
lingers. Finding a way
home.

Taint

She returns to what has assumed
the name of home. Stray light,
the bedroom devoid
of him. She undresses, de-leaves
like an autumnal tree. All the layers
and what they have to hide.
The bare bones underneath, quivering.
Longing for birds. She dreams the wood
infested with bugs, their mandibles
sawing up the sun-shy soft
flesh beneath the bark. Maggots
in her shoes. Worms in her hair.
No space left unviolated.
Irreverence and sacrilege.
She did not choose that storm.

All that has been touched has turned
itself wrong and inside out, has filled
itself with the immeasurable weight
of disgust, dirt, and days
piling up like stones.

The body counted in stretch marks
trying to cover all that ache.

The bathroom. The sink. The holy water.
Things can be so clean and white
and yet so stained with empty.
She scrubs her hands ‘til sunset sings
because blood is the best disinfectant.
The sterile speech of razor blades
listing immutable facts. You are soiled.
You are nothing. The limbs of a doll
that go slack in an angry child’s grasp.
Maybe under the raw
red flesh, some splinter of you
remains.

Fingers draw lines in ink and shame
on a girl that did not want them.
The stains that are sins without a chance
of repentance or redemption or grace.
The smudges that never
come off again, the things that rot
underground.

She had never known how the morning dew
could become the sweat of fear
or how all the stardust in the world
could clot into dust and filth.

Arrows

You watch me undress
even though you can’t really see me
because my body is a ruin
and I have vanished under the rubble.

I am writhing under your eyes
which might as well be crosshairs,
palpitating in this animal carcass
that takes up too much space.

Bits and pieces of me scatter everywhere
like dead skin cells or eyelashes,
tiny insignificant things you can wish on
but that never come true.

This is how I mark my territory,
in chewed off fingernails and stray hair bands,
careless words and stuttered apologies,
sacred beads of spit and blood.

This is where I have come to love and to haunt.
This is where I will raise a little church.
But you can’t really see me now
because I’ve gone inside to pray.

I am building nests
on branches that can’t hold me.
And my spine curves like the bent neck of a deer
bowing before the hunter’s gun.

Like it is trying to tell you something secret.
Like it wants to bridge an enormous gap.

You only come to watch me unravel
so you can hide in the cracks.

I am but a bird
in the palm of your hand.
Just one little twist of your fingers
to break its brittle bones.

You will only really see me
once you dare to lift off the burial shroud
and find out that the crumpled cerecloth
once upon a time
was a wing.

Sick Time

Sickrooms are all similar in that time ceases to exist there. Or rather, it catapults itself into ridiculousness. Thinning into spiderweb thread, crawling sisyphean, slowing glacially — then, suddenly: A galloping of heartbeats into panic. It flees, it melts, it shivers. Fevering. It becomes useless. Days crumble into weeks into months into the semblance of a life. Time is vicious in that it does not stop for anyone. It marches onward with ant-like determination. The seasons behind the window change even when you no longer move with them. After a long snow-covered sigh, a choir of trills, tweets, and warbles finally returns to the world outside, a world that has no use for you anymore. It is becoming spring, with or without you. It has to. The birds must sing.

For #PoemsAbout #Spent ✨ for @thebrokenspine.co.uk & @alanparrywriter.co.uk When you give everything you have but it still isn’t enough.
Selfless // Spent

You lie beside him like a gutted animal.
This needy. This vulnerable. This far gone.

Nothing is as exhausting as opening up,
as making a church of the mess of yourself,
as becoming a light for another.

Ribcage and sanctuary. Shepherding the wayward sheep
back from the storm-clad edge. Him and you
both. Homebound.

You wanted so much to be a morning star
but you’re just the flick of his lighter
with which he immolates you.

You define your worth by how satisfied the hunter is,
how easy the bullet’s job. How small can you make
yourself so you’re not in his way, how fast can you do what he wants.

Now he has rearranged your entrails
to fit more pain inside. But you agree and carry it
even like a crown. Anything, everything
to make him stay; you are out there and dying
just reaching for his hand.

Afterwards, you sob silently behind the bathroom door
as if your sadness was a great secret,
something so dangerous and feral,
you have to keep it hidden and leashed.
Or, worse even, you would be found out, exposed
for the wretched hollow bitch that you are,
a martyr no angel would want.

All you have to offer is the bones of yourself
and isn’t that terrible,
to be so thoroughly you?

All that you are
and were and aspired to be, you have given everything to him.
The myrrh of ruptured spleens and breathless lungs,
the hard gold of marrow. Incense of spit, myth told in freckles
and stretch marks, stuttering. All your unspeakable stories spelled out
scar by never-healed scar.

And yet, he will get up and walk through that door.
And leave, like you’ve never ever happened.

You showed off your best tricks
but you’re still just a dog.

Your hot tears tangle helplessly in his wet hair
like an army of startled fleas.

You stand on the train station platform as it snows.
He kisses you goodbye and it’s like drowning a puppy.
Your teeth clash like barbed wire fences.

He says see you soon and in that moment you know
that there is nothing more cruel

#WeirdMicro Opaline Grove 🦋✨ #writingcommunity
When butterflies die, they are laid to rest in the opaline grove, a place where myth becomes memory. Chitin-lidded & iridescent, cocoon coffins unpetal themselves. The chrysalis is calling them home, offering to spin time into silk and self into translucency, turning them into keepsakes for the sky. She remembers each of them, their particular flutter and wild prismatic song. She misses each of them, too, every single one, and spells their requiems in pearly drops of dew. And when the butterfly corpses dream, all the leaves and blades of grass shiver, as if thinking of wings.

Pestilence

In the sewers, the last of the rat pastors
sink their tiny yellow teeth into the bile-
soaked pages of Revelation 16:2
because death makes everyone a zealot
and suffering equals truth.
Pain brings everyone closer,
closer to self, nearer to God. The cast out leper
may well lose a limb necrosed
but what he gains is the knowledge
of thresholds and ascension.
How to levitate without legs.
Power through putridity and loss.
What the rotting does is it cleans out your insides.
Makes more room for real love, bright lights,
benediction, and fire.
Purity through pain. Absolution.
Nobody is as fervent and immaculate
as those tortured, nobody is as clean
as the hurt.
Sing sing sing
to the rodent congregation
in their squeaky squealy voices
as if nailed to a cross.
To be this contagious is to be divine
punishment
and everyone knows that
pestilence walks before Him.
They are not vermin but seraphs,
plague angels, all of them,
delivering judgement and catharsis
and a way up above.
The more they are hated, the more God will adore them,
the more they are hunted, the holier they get.
They are martyrs, dying for our filthiness,
dying cause they showed us
our own ugly face.
And I will go under
but you are coming with me,
six feet closer to heaven,
full of ticks, fleas
but saved.

Still trying to catch up with #PoemsAbout so here’s one for #UnderTheSkin ✨ @thebrokenspine.co.uk @alanparrywriter.co.uk
Birth Marks

Under the skin is where he touched you like God.
Under the skin is where infection dreams.

Under the skin is the splayed open carcass
in denial of its roadkill fate.

Under the skin is where your mom calls you baby
when she sees you like this in your room
hidden under the dog-dirty bedsheets, gagging from all that want.

Under the skin is the neon panic, the cheap amphetamine heart,
the bradycardic love song of tranquilizers, the enormous death-waltz of time.
The plastic teardrop-drool of neuroleptic brain replacements
gone awry like a misfired prayer.
Under the skin is where fear keeps her diary, where plague rats and worms
build their nests.

All the hushed overdoses and the rage-drunken frenzy, the labyrinth of thrice-locked doors,
your magpie-secrecy, the aseptic glare of anesthetized hospital lights.
All the boys who did not kiss you and the girls who ignored you swarm there
like starved locusts feasting on shame.
This is where the dead hold their vespers and requiems, this is where ghosts congregate for mass.
Memories, milk, and blood clot into lesions, liturgies of wound and raw nerve.

Your bad tattoos and your pockmarked face. The sagging aging excess flesh and need.
When he finally embraces you after you’ve begged enough, it’s like a hospice waiting room.

Under the skin is where you stop being a girl and become a soft body
defined by its yearning.
Under the skin is how I love you is never true, or at least only until
they get to know you better.

Under the skin is the humiliation
of how you chose to believe
in the way that all atheists become crazed zealots
baptized in sweat in the church of their deathbeds.

It’s where you’ll only ever be the crazy one, the freak sideshow idiot leper whore doll.
It’s where you’re too sick to function but not sick enough to make them care a shred.
Under the skin is the mess and the bile, the hive where the fury breeds.

Under the skin is where the foxes go when night sinks her wet face …

What I Want From This Year

A winter that won’t end. Pomegranates
ripe with maggots and guts.
Snow-blind windows. Ether and wound.
An ocelot at my wedding that devours me

the sky in murmuration. To be a fawn
released into a shotgun. The gift
of hibernation. A darkness to hide.

I know we’re already onto the next theme but I still have a very very late submission for last week’s #PoemsAbout #Undressed ✨ The topic just spoke to me somehow & I wanted to write about what remains when you’ve been completely #undressed to the bones. Faith? Conviction? Or maybe even power?
Lamb After Slaughter

They undress you like this:
First,
the skin peeled back like an apple
with the honey and ants underneath,
sweetness and terror
and an endless fall.
Nerves, second.
All the wasting guts
and promises
and when your body is
a rocking horse, back and forth,
back and forth,
and a toy broken
senseless, discarded in a rage.
You try to shield your eyes
and keep whatever image was in them,
long before, an angel on a bridge
with his hands stretched like ropes.
Your first communion,
a dress as white as maggot flesh.
What is left of you after
everything has been taken out?
The words on the lips of that angel,

I am shamelessly copying @stacebot.bsky.social and herewith post an unsolicited poem for #PoemsAbout #NewYear ✨ Y’all are an amazing and incredibly inspiring community and I wish you all the best for the new year. 🫶🏻
New Year’s Resolution

Maybe more a prayer than a resolution
but isn’t everything. Even a wound, even
that concussion that I gave myself
for Christmas. The unforgiving hardness
of a door or a fist or how you left
like a sparrow down a shotgun. Anyway.
The lights are still on
and on and on and I am so holy
and empty as a god. Speaking of:
Dear Lord, please grant me the freedom
and the unashamed strength to write
awful poems. It doesn’t have to be good.
It only has to be true.
Amen.

the inner mirror

january frost
has silverglazed the lake into a looking-
glass reflecting back the night

and that itself, the water’s glimmer
is mirrored back on winter moon’s
tin-translucent skin

and so it is
that all things melt into a one
gleam so bright your eyes
hurt from the sheer bright fearlessness of it

bouncing off each other back and forth
like a never-finished hymn
gasp-sung by celestial choirs

ever swelling like the lungs
of storm-wassailing sparrows
that grow into a holy throat
with how the wind prays through them

and for a second
there all of a sudden
among all that indomitable blackened cold
in your gaze you hold

every single star
you’ve dreamed
winking back at you

No cheating, reskeet with the most recent photo of your pet Poor Albert was scared of the fireworks on New Year’s Eve so we built him a little cave ♡

What The World Wants From A Poet

A way out.
A door creaking silver time-backwards
on rusted tooth-hinges
into the forgiving lilac hush
of a dream. Impossible things. Possibly
bananas. Angel wings. Wren feathers.
Where the red thread went or the blood
or any of it. Time, more. Never enough.
Where did I go? The way through.
A hand to hold. The gleam in one’s eyes,
always. Keys. Yes, keys! The key.
The one and only and the father and the son
and the Holy Spirit. What makes us holy.
Love. What we had when we were born
but lost living. I want to open my eyes.
I want. A home with a light.
A way in.

between the years time counts backwards curled around itself

you are a single snowflake falling
and falling like someone in love
through dawn-gleam and dusk-hush
and owl moon-calls through days
through the rips in calendar pages
through lifetimes eras the seconds
it takes until the clock strikes now until
never until forever until somebody
says I think that she is not quite here
until everything-is-upside-down
and skewered like an eyelash wish
in a winter gale who can say
where the falling ends and where you begin?

maybe you have always been falling maybe
that is what life is made of: a lone drop
of rain going down the throat of eternity
and even if it never reaches the ocean it still
reflects the light maybe it is the sole
source of light that there is ever has
been

here
now

#vss365 #struggle ✨ #poetry A belated Christmas poem. Sort of.
Rejoice

Is holiness myrrh and incense or the tooth
of the oxen as he grinds
the hay, content to rejoice
in how the world keeps turning.
He will not be slaughtered, he will ascend
in a rush of blood and awe.

Maybe it is enough, for once,
to place just yourself on the altar.
Maybe a cathedral is a willow tree.

The sacred cross is where the swan bone of your wrist
meets the chapel of my mouth.
The wind that gives way to your words
as if they were prophecies.

It is following the gleam of a morning star
where others only see the dying flicker
of a firefly, it is crossing over every dead end
and going further still.

It is calling a struggle a prayer.

Sometimes,
a new king is born.
Sometimes,
just a smile.
