As a peds ID physician, I care for ppl who cannot always be fully immunized, while often speaking with families uncertain about #vaccines. Max died from #measles, before he could finish med school. Some depend on the immunity of others. Grateful to his father for sharing his story in @cmaj.ca.

I know this is just what the Liberals believe at this point, but ask yourself: if Carney were a CPC wrecker, what if anything would he be doing differently?

It is Pride Month. Throughout this month, I will be sharing the stories of how Canadians fought for equality. Today it is the story of Michael Phair.
A Pride Month graphic honouring Michael Phair, with a rainbow-gradient PRIDE MONTH title across the top. On the left is a photo of Phair smiling in glasses, a striped shirt, and a yellow sweater vest. On the right, text describes his 1981 arrest during the Pisces Health Spa raid, his successful appeal, his activism, his role in Edmonton’s first Pride Parade, and his election to Edmonton City Council. A banner at the bottom reads MICHAEL PHAIR (1950 - PRESENT).

It’s ludicrous that everyone accepts “defense spending needs to rise.” Why! What opponent are we supposed to be fighting where any fiscally plausible rise in spending makes a meaningful difference?

Liam was taken from Columbia Heights, the town just south of my high school in Fridley and just north of the Arts district in NE Minneapolis. I spent a lot of time with friends there after extracurriculars. News of his abduction completely broke my heart. I’m glad he’s home. #Comics4Liam

“AZT killed more people than AIDS” is false. I was a medical resident in the late 1980s. AZT wasn’t perfect, but it saved lives and was the first step on the way to modern HIV therapy. Evidence, history, and context here. paulsaxmd.substack.com/p/no-azt-did...

What is skepticism? In my lifetime as a word-nerd, I have known "skepticism" to refer to a sort of stubborn insistence upon rigor and evidence in place of things like dogma and "common sense." A skeptic, by those terms, is someone who questions what they are told. Crucially, a skeptic actually questions, as in seeks answers. A person who merely refuses to learn what can be known is not a skeptic, but rather an ignoramus; a person who raises questions but does not seek their answers is not a skeptic, but a bullshitter. A person who rejects empirical knowledge, who refuses the answers that exist while requesting ones more to their liking that flatter their preference for unfounded contrarian gibberish and conspiratorial paranoia, is not a skeptic. They're the exact opposite of that: a mark. A sucker. A credulous boob.

This is the fundamental point of agreement between the American gentry class (car dealers, fast food franchise owners) and the Silicon Valley tech elite: Workers should have less power, the economy can be worse overall, but I myself should have more power to decide what happens.

Screenshot of text:

By Rubenstein's own description, this piece—an endorsement of the protests as an expression of public frustration with injustice—was the opposite of Cotton's view. What Cotton was writing against, as was obvious at the time, was the protest movement itself.

Further underscoring this, Rubenstein narrated the editing history of one of the crucial passages in the piece:

[Blockquote begins] I was given the job of fact-checking and line-editing. Among other edits, I inserted a line making clear the distinction between peaceful protesters and law-breaking looters. [Blockquote ends.]

That "distinction between peaceful protesters and law-breaking looters" was held up by the op-ed's defenders, after the fact, as the heart of Cotton's argument, proof that he never meant to call for military action against the protests themselves. Yet Rubenstein described this supposedly essential, definitive piece of the argument as not having come from Cotton at all.
