incidentally I think this kind of stuff is actually part of why "cult" isnt the most helpful term (apart from the usual religious studies grumbles). however you define rationalism (as a scene, as an ideology, as a professional network) it is so much more flexible than you think.

a lot of them it's not even conscious or disingenuous, intentional hypocrite shit. their ideology in the moment is determined by "leadership knows best" that mixes in with a deep need for safety and comfort, an absence of tension, so they move to whatever feels like a 'safe' viewpoint to have
