I promise you the politics will sort itself out if you just tell the people what their elected officials are doing or not doing. You don’t need to mediate that.

Like, how hard is it just to accurately report the facts of our shared reality without gamifying it into “what does this mean for the red team and the blue team?”

There are a thousand factors that a person could point to to explain The Way Things Are, but one I get stuck on a lot is the fact that I swear that within my life time journalists shifted from reporting on what politicians were doing (legislation, etc) to reporting on “the game” of politics.

When was the last time the press ran a story about republicans making intemperate remarks about democrats? Fretting about whether republicans are doing enough to be bipartisan, to reach out to the forgotten voters who favor the democrats?

Seriously, though—and this is not to dismiss his obvious skills—so much of it comes down to “What if we create a lived-in feeling world in which we follow lived-in feeling and relatably vulnerable characters and shot it well?” Feels like that shouldn’t be so elusive and yet is exceedingly rare.

“Everything is 40% more expensive because of AI” is a great line for an opposition party trying to unseat the AI-supported incumbents, if any Democratic consultants wanted to take a short break from dehumanizing trans kids to actually try winning a contested election.

A note to all my fellow parts of the LGBTQIA; throwing Trans folks under the bus won't save you, quite the opposite. It's the thin edge of wedge to see just how far they can go, and you will eventually be on the list. You cannot appease the endless appetite of Fascism by feeding it smaller bites.

As an American political historian, I can confirm that this Congress has been "almost unmatched in history" in several categories -- sad abdication of its war powers, craven surrender of the power of the purse, weird refusal to conduct meaningful oversight, and an utter failure to pass actual laws.

Again, there is clear evidence a data center moratorium would peel far more votes away from the GOP than the 10-15 (not thousand, literally 10-15 total) who might switch over this same crowd’s demand to betray queer people. It’s malpractice that the party won’t ditch these professional losers.

Again, bigots will never choose bigotry-lite over the real thing. You're not going to win them but you're going to drive away people who otherwise would have voted for you. And this year -- when voters most of all want "a fighter" in Congress -- running ads about how you will not fight is idiotic.

underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.
Abdul El-Sayed: "Weijia, with all due respect, this is the third time you've asked about a Twitch streamer ... their whole game is to make us fight culture wars so that we don't pay attention to the fact the president has made $2.2 billion ... "
