a #lake & a #mountain #Stunday #ECK for years I have posted pics with this peak above Whiskeytown Lake & incorrectly identified it as Bully Choop. I was wrong. this is Shasta Bally, the tallest peak in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

the Wintu Tribe inhabited this area and called the mountain 'bohem buli' - big mountain. Bally is the rough translation of buli.

$Bright sunshine with a few puffy clouds. We see only the portion of the sky right above the horizon, so it is a rather light blue. Standing atop a mountain on rugged cliffs of fractured dark gray rock. A few leafy ground-hugging shrubs in brick red and maroon autumn colors grow out of the rocks. The mountainside below us is covered with dark green spruce and fir trees with some hardwoods sporting orange and gold leaves mixed in. On a plateau a few hundred feet below is a large mountain pond reflecting the otherwise unseen deep blue of the September Maine sky above. Beyond the plateau is a country of rugged mountains and valleys. The plateau and those mountains and valleys are all predominantly the deep green of the spruce-fir forest with a few hardwoods beginning to show colors mixed in.$

While photographing Little Tipsoo Lake on Thursday, I noticed a trail behind the lake and decided to follow it. A short way up, I found this view with fall color all around the trail, Little Tipsoo Lake below, and Mount Rainier in the distance. I had to sit there for a while and take it all in.

Mount Rainier rises beyond Little Tipsoo Lake and a forest of dark evergreens. A narrow trail leads between large rocks and through red, orange, and gold alpine foliage in the foreground. The scene feels bright, colorful, and inviting.
