It's not, but these communities probably would get that type of factory because they don't have the population to staff that factory and logistics would be extra costly. Data centers don't need those things once they are up and running.

In WI, there is plenty of open land, water, and a cooler climate making it ideal for data centers in a lot of ways. The issue is electricity and generating that additional electricity causes environmental concerns that these communities wouldn't otherwise have.

I could be wrong and use anecdotal evidence to make assumptions nationwide, but here in Wisconsin all the data centers being proposed in are in rural communities that aren't heavy industry. Also there is the famous Lake Tahoe example: fortune.com/2026/05/12/l...

In many cases you can't just add these data centers to the grid. Additional electricity generation or grid improvements are needed.

This is very hand wavy. Data center constantly consume tons of electricity and are noisy 24/7. Pretty unusual for a manufacturing factory to be going full tilt at 2am.
