Warren: "This has been their argument every time -- they cut taxes and say, 'Ultimately it's really going to pay off for you.' What's happened every time? The academics study it very carefully and say, 'What really happened is the richest people got richer and everybody else got left behind.'"

let me brag: writing my dissertation was idyllic. it was 2015, i was living in san diego, millennial optimism was in full effect. i wrote in big blocks 2x a day, with 10k+ steps and a nap in between. i’ve been chasing that for years! this semester i’m on sabbatical, and so far so good (considering)🤞

Preparing for a workshop on teaching critical thinking in STEM in light of current, let's say pressures, and decided I should start my talk with a slides that lays out the values that form my premises:
Slide header: Premises/values: Cards on the table

Bullet points:
* I care more about students’ learning than about the “accuracy” of grades or the prestige associated with a specific degree
* I want to work collaboratively with my students, rather than policing them
* I don’t want to spend any time reading, much less providing feedback on, something nobody wrote
* Science is a human, communal process; there is no knowing without knowers; and our work cannot be autocompleted
* Deep thinking and human connection are always more important than polish, speed, or “productivity”
* Research agendas should not be set by & for industry

In academia, we rarely appreciate the fact that we have all survived and escaped an education system built for uniformity and mediocrity, and that it is an incredible freedom to work at a public university. The question is what we do with this freedom. Uncritical "AI" adoption renounces it.

Today I was awarded tenure at Gallaudet! This summer marks 10 years since finishing my PhD, and this fall I will be on sabbatical, trying to write a lot and to redesign my undergrad syntax class. I’m so grateful to keep doing what I love. Pic is me at the recent #ICCG14 at Princeton #linguistics

I don't need a summary of what's available online, in biographies, or even in my own notes. I need to comb through and find the great details, decide what interests ME. No, it's not efficient. It's slow and painstaking. But I don't believe in efficiency as an ultimate good, especially in writing. /
