From RF Kuang's Babel. I think a lot about this when presenting to hearing audiences through interpreters. I do not think kuang would make a distinction between interpreting and translating in this case.
‘Betrayal. Translation means doing violence upon the original, means warping and distorting it for foreign, unintended eyes. So then where does that leave us? How can we conclude, except by acknowledging that an act of translation is then necessarily always an act of betrayal?’

When we rented my manual wheelchair I did not imagine that I would hurt my shoulders every time I wheel. I wanted the exercise not the misery. Looking into power scooters for teaching.

I know this is petty but I would love a small measure of prestige as a scholar of disability that other fields seem to get on social media. It feels like once disability is added, the knowledge and years of studying are devalued

Good morning it’s a great day to turn on required alt text for images and ensure that text is always contextual, and if it’s funny then it’s at least also accurate! 🫶🎈

I really appreciate that when antisemitism gets popular, often the loudest non-Jewish voices I hear are our Muslim brothers and sisters. I hope the Jewish community takes that to heart and reciprocates when Islamophobia happens.

do you realize you're victim blaming here? I don't think that you do, but you are. Blaming someone for how they protest injustice isn't cool, especially if it's non-violent. If people protest at the oppressor's comfort level, then it's not really a protest, is it?

Also: if for whatever reason anyone needs help with adding alt text to an image they can just put “ALT4Me” someplace in the post and it’ll be dumped into a feed where human volunteers will add it as a reply. #nofeed

This rental has four different color bulbs. Four. Different colors. Is this a hearing thing? To ignore stuff like light temperature?

From Smilges, J. Crip Negativity, page 25. It really describes how I feel right now having been largely bed ridden for the past months. I feel sad, but cripply so.
Some days my bad crip feelings are felt so cripply that I live in a heap of tears and blankets. Sometimes I feel despair—total, fucking despair. While a part of me is tempted to read these days and times as aberrations, temporary departures from the longer oeuvre of my affectivity that is, perhaps, less intensely pessimistic, I want to honor the depth of my bad crip feelings as no more or less aberrant than the bouts of optimism I feel at other times.

A bunch of large accounts blocked me during my alt text pile-on. I can still see replies to those blocked posts if I follow the replyer. It kinda sucks to click a post to see what it's replying to only for BLOCKED POST to pop up.

Subverting the “gnomes are a Jewish caricature” trope by giving my little guy Yiddish first and last names, making them highly value education and strive for social justice, and giving him a sweet Slavic accent very occasionally peppered with even more Yiddish phrases

Disability is about deviance from socially expected norms. Which is why Puar among others developed the concept of debility, which focuses on the suffering aspect. Because of how suffering makes us feel J. Smilges calls it crip negativity.

One challenge of basically losing June and July to illness is that next Jan I have to explain to the university why I wasn't as productive in my annual review. "I didn't publish as much this year because I was trying not to die. Kthxbai"

Thinking more about Schalk's discussion of how people use ableist language to bring attention to issues. I'm specifically thinking of IEPs and how schools need to emphasize the deficit to get services. 🧪

From Dr sami schalk 's Black Disability Politics. Oralism is curative violence.
Eunjung Kim calls curative violence. Kim uses this term to describe “the physical and material violence against people with disabilities that are justified in the name of cure.”29 Cure here refers broadly to any attempt to lessen or eliminate illness or disability. Thus, curative violence recognizes that society’s ableist obsession with curing disabled and chronically ill people can often be damaging, resulting in further disability, debilitation, or even death.

I think BlueSky’s first mistake was thinking shiny tech would make people ignore the people problems in social media and make some social media community without actually caring bout the community. And they can’t say they r with that recent self harm post lol

Dr. Sami schalk has been placing k95 masks in those little free libraries. I love this idea for supporting the communities in using masks during poor AGI periods (as well as reducing transmissible diseases). Thinking about how I can do similar where I live.

. @bsky.app @jay.bsky.team the “moderation” story here is shameful. You have been warned & told so many times. Mostly by Black women. We all want this place to work. But “work” means pro-Black. Banning not depressed ppl, but rather: ppl onboarding nazis and p*dos. Get it together yesterday.

This!! (And hopefully it posts with alt-text now!)
So journalists must ground these efforts in a genuine understanding of ableism. Ableism maintains its power through the continuous dehumanization of disabled people, and language is a key tool for accomplishing this. The need to avoid ableist language is thus not about avoiding hurt feelings. Instead, it’s about confronting stakes that are grave, violent, oppressive, and ongoing: forced institutionalization and incarceration; social isolation; unmet basic needs; and barriers to entering schools, workplaces, and public spaces.

3. Most importantly, although people think bullying is okay for some transgressions (transphobia particularly) they don’t think bullying is ok for ableism. Although what counts as bullying is not clear to me. Ableism however is a deeply structured issue that has been built into this platform

A few things I’ve learned today 1. People feel that ableism can be separated out from other axises of power (eg sexism, racism, transphobia, etc). They aren’t able to articulate why. 2. People don’t want to feel terrible for engaging in ableism for various reasons (unintentional, forgot etc)

i think sometimes, disenfranchized and marginalized people look for community so that they can have a way of getting back at the world. and i don't blame them for that, but operating exclusively out of spite has diminishing returns.

FYI that word is from Polari, a mix of italian/French, Romani, Yiddish, drug slang, more that started as a sailor language, bc the parlance of the circus, wrestlers, sex workers, organized crime, & tho it dates to the 16th c, from ~ mid 19th c. to the 1960s it was a SEKRIT GAY LANGUAGE in Britain.
