The NYPD just released surveillance video of the ICE shooting (which occurred off camera). Two men in civilian clothes run up to a car with guns drawn. One second later, one man begins smashing the butt of his gun into the driver’s side window. The driver appears to panic and hit the gas.

An Ithaca police story. Many years ago, pre cell phones, a young woman riding a bike on a narrow, steep, windy street near my house was clipped by an impatient driver going same direction. (Riding on sidewalks is illegal here.) I heard the accident and went to check if everyone was OK.

"...system that privileged the children of the affluent and screwed the working class." The only problem with this statement is that we've been here the entire time. We saw what happened and how with our own eyes. The reactionaries' caricature of non-existent left-wing bogeymen is treated as real.

So it should come as no surprise to anyone that Brooks' prescription for this problem includes all sorts of things that boil down to "put real Conservatives in charge for a couple generations" and does not include anything that looks or sounds like self-reflection or acknowledging responsibility.

Not sure if everyone appreciates the difference. Rooftop solar hardwires into your main panel via a dedicated breaker, so it requires a permit, an installer, an electrician, and a utility agreement. Balcony solar just plugs into a wall outlet, sharing an existing circuit with no permits or rewiring.

I like Tilly for keeping it real like this, in a way a lot of the other state formation bros don't. (Giddens is another.)
From the short-run perspectives of ordinary people, what we in blithe retrospect call “state formation” included the setting of ruthless tax farmers against poor peasants and artisans, the forced sale for taxes of animals that would have paid for dowries, the imprisoning of local leaders as hostages to the local community’s payment of overdue taxes, the hanging of others who dared to protest, the loosing of brutal soldiers on a hapless civilian population, the conscription of young men who were their parents’ main hope for comfort in their old age, the forced purchase of tainted salt, the elevation of already arrogant local propertyholders into officers of the state, and the imposition of religious conformity in the name of public order and morality.

I very much dislike the failure of confidence in language here. Instead of saying “not great. “ could we perhaps say this is an atrocity? No, I guess not, because too many people would no longer be receptive to knowing about the event and would object to the language used to describe it.

The feds just made it official: They won't fight a bid by members of the "Broadview 6" for attorneys' fees. They do "not concede that the United States has acted or done anything to warrant those fees." They also say there should be no discovery. Full filing: cst.brightspotcdn.com/dc/d1/e34a37...
I. Hyde Amendment Motion
Discussion
The Hyde Amendment motions are not ripe for decision and may never be. The United States does not intend to contest defendants’ entitlement to reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs in this matter as permitted by statute. (To be clear, the United States’ litigation decision not to challenge the defendant’s entitlement to fees, like in any typical settlement, does not concede that the United States has acted or done anything to warrant those fees.) The parties are currently attempting to work out the amount of recoverable fees and expenses. This court should take defendants’ Hyde Amendment motions under advisement while the parties attempt to amicably resolve this civil issue in good faith. The United States received the last of the former defendants’ fee submissions the day before this response was being filed, so the parties are now in a position to negotiate.
II. Discovery
Discovery related to defendants’ Hyde Amendment motions is not warranted under the circumstances of this case nor under applicable law. Defendants sought discovery, in their own words, to give them the “opportunity to demonstrate the bad faith, vexatious, and/or frivolous nature of this misguided prosecution.” Dkt. 206. But they will not be required to make that showing, so there is no reason or basis under the statute or otherwise to conduct that discovery.

Wake up babe, new exoplanet classification system just dropped
Figure 3 from Hasegawa et al. 2026. Canonical and refined classification schemes of exoplanets. Key planet properties and relevant physical processes are summarized. In the canonical classification scheme, four types (super-Mercuries, super/sub-Earths, sub-giants and gas giants) are recovered as often used in the literature (Section 2.6). The refined classification scheme expands these types to eight in total due to evolution processes (Section 4.2): super-Mercuries, bare cores, collisionally sculpted cores, photoevaporated cores, collisionally sculpted sub-giants, photoevaporated sub-giants, vapor-rich sub-giants, and gas giants. Among them, massive bare cores, collisionally sculpted cores, photoevaporated cores, collisionally sculpted sub-giants, photoevaporated sub-giants, and vapor-rich sub-giants are potentially water-rich.

So much so, the anonymous finance worker admitted, that his firm now actively avoids seeking out AI-literate STEM graduates, and opts to comb through humanities students instead.
