Bad news. Nuclear power is slow, dirty, vastly expensive, cannot run safely during heatwaves. Furthermore, as the likelihood of societal collapse grows, it is simply an unacceptable gamble: Do we really want more nuclear power stations ready to melt down / be bombed / be robbed??

My thoughts - if adaptation to food insecurity is reactive and shallow rather than strategic and transformative, then we are simply storing up trouble for ourselves. Reactive-shallow adaptation costs more, doesn’t actually solve anything and puts us more at risk over time.

Some intelligence reports need to be kept confidential, for obvious reasons. This is not one of those - it's not about hostile foreign states, and it needs to be understood by ordinary UK citizens to inform decisions about their own safety and security.

This means that rather than being fixated on what can be proved, it is most interested in what should be worried about and what we are exposed to, and of course as part of that what the worst case scenario is. This makes it much more useful to governments and populations than a scientific report.

Rupert Read @rupertread.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
The other key distinguishing thing about the JIC report (beyond the simple, crucial fact of its authoritative authorship) is its methodology. It is not a scientific report. It is >a risk analysis<.

The climate crisis poses a critical defence threat. So why are MPs still being denied access to the full Joint Intelligence Committee report?
Graphic with a map-style weather image in the background and a black-and-white photo of Adrian Ramsay, MP for Waveney Valley. Headline reads: “UK WARNS EL NIÑO POSES CRITICAL DEFENCE THREAT.” A quote from Adrian Ramsay reads: “It’s good that the foreign secretary is presenting the findings of this crucial report to ministers from other governments. But it begs the question, why are MPs in this country still being denied access to the full report? And, most importantly, why has our government still not published its response to how it will address the stark findings?”
