Politicians share frustration over water pollution
Politicians and campaigners have shared their frustration at the pollution incidents that led to South West Water being fined nearly £8m for hundreds of sewage spills. On Tuesday at Plymouth Magistrates' Court the company was fined £7,867,733 and ordered to pay £329,993 after admitting a series of pollution-related offences over six years in Bodmin, Harlyn, Playing Place, and Polperro in Cornwall, and Plymouth in Devon. It apologised for what happened and said it remained "focussed on the future" and that "significant improvements" have been made across the sites. Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall, Ben Maguire, said South West Water (SWW) committed a "staggering catalogue of pollution. "South West Water has repeatedly broken the law, poisoning North Cornwall's rivers, seas, and my constituents with impunity", he added. "Yet again, the response is essentially another slap on the wrist fine, which a company of this size can absorb as simply the cost of doing business. "The hard-working South West Water technicians and other staff I meet are being completely let down by these rotten executives. 'Sick to death' "I strongly believe we urgently need much tougher penalties for repeat offenders, including prison sentences for those responsible for overseeing serious and illegal...

Estonia blames Russia for arson attack on drone maker supplying Ukraine
European and Nato leaders have expressed full support for Estonia and Ukraine after the Baltic state said an August arson attack on a drone manufacturer supplying Kyiv was an act of sabotage commissioned by Moscow’s security services. Estonia’s foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna, said on social media on Tuesday that such attacks were “absolutely unacceptable” and that Russia’s chargé d’affaires in the Estonian capital, Tallinn, was being summoned to his ministry. Estonia’s national security agency said a fire broke out on 15 August at a building in Tallinn used by Milrem Robotics, which makes unmanned ground vehicles used in Ukraine. Two Latvian suspects were detained in Latvia on 17 August, followed by a third the next day. All three were handed over to Estonia, it said. Tsahkna said the subsequent investigation had led authorities to “conclude with certainty” that the attack was “an act of sabotage ordered by the special services of the Russian Federation”. It was part of a “broader campaign across Europe aimed at intimidating us and weakening our support for Ukraine”, he said. Estonia’s prime minister, Kristen Michal, said his country’s response to Russia’s campaign would “be the opposite: stronger security at home, more support for Ukraine and...

The prestigious Nobel Prizes return next week, bringing with them the annual anticipation over which scientists and discoveries will receive the field’s highest honors. The 2026 laureates will be announced from October 5 to 12. To get a sense of who might be in the running, we asked The Scientist’s readers to share their top predictions for this year’s prizes in Physiology or Medicine, Physics, and Chemistry. They have just received the 2026 Lasker Basic Medical Research Award, which is a strong Nobel signal. Note: Stanford University School of Medicine sleep researcher Emmanuel Mignot and University of Tsukuba molecular geneticist Masashi Yanagisawa also jointly received the 2023 Breakthrough Prize in Life Science for their work on the genetic cause of narcolepsy. Tiago Góss dos Santos, Tumor Biologist, A.C.Camargo Cancer Center I predict that Lotte Bjerre Knudsen and John Eng will receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Exceptionally Well-Preserved Feathered Dinosaur Reveals More About The Evolution Of Flight
Microraptorines, which are cousins to the famous Velociraptor, raise interesting questions about how flight evolved. It is thought they could glide and perhaps even sustain short bursts of powered flight, and one camp holds they evolved this ability separately from the lineage leading to birds. This would mean the prerequisites for flight evolved twice in the Paraves (birds and their closest relatives). The competing hypothesis is that some form of flight evolved right at the early beginnings of the Paraves and then was subsequently lost or improved on depending on the lineage. By comparing the skeleton with those of its relatives, the team thinks this new fossil argues against a single origin of flight, as the flight-related features of microraptorines and birds appear to have evolved in a different order. Also, in the living birds the team compared, there is a trade-off between the growth rates of the front limbs and the hind-limbs that results in the hind-limbs being usable first while the wings take longer to come to maturity. However, by looking at the microscopic structure of the bones, it appears in microraptorines there is no difference, or in some cases the reverse is true. This hints that the...

LEADER OF THE GREEN PARTY

"Unlike his predecessor, we have a PM who talks like he gets it. But sadly like his predecessor he isn’t prepared to break from the powerful and wealthy interests that have created an inequality, affordability and a climate crisis.

Hope is not just a slogan, it needs to mean real change. The speech today had no wealth taxes, no rent controls, no water nationalisation and a strong hint of more North Sea drilling.

It is disappointing that we have a country ready to break from the last 40 years, a Labour government with the majority to do it, and yet what we see are more half measures, reannouncements and tinkering."

Ksenia Maximova Went From Top Model to Anti-War Activist to London Councillor. Now She's Wanted By Russia.
Ksenia Maximova was ranked among the world’s 50 most successful models in the 2000s, but today is better known as a prominent figure in Russia’s anti-war movement in London. Since 2022, Maximova has worked to support Ukraine, help anti-war Russian emigres and refugees in Britain and collaborated with the Russian Anti-War Committee. More recently, she became a rare Russian-born figure to enter British politics after she was elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor in London. On Monday, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) opened a criminal case against her, accusing her of participating in a “terrorist organization” and claiming that the Russian Democratic Society, which she co-founded, collected money and other assistance “in the interests of the Kyiv regime.” Maximova, 40, was also placed on Russia’s wanted list and added to its register of “terrorists and extremists.” In an interview with The Moscow Times, Maximova discussed entering British politics as a Russian immigrant, her work supporting Ukraine and why she is considering running for Parliament. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. The Moscow Times: Does being added to the list of ‘terrorists and extremists’ affect your political career? Ksenia Maximova: I’d say it’s more no than yes. Everyone...
