These figures must be understood in the context of the mainstreaming of far-right politics and racist ideas which create the conditions for racist violence to flourish. Politicians and media actors have to take responsibility and be held accountable for their enablement of this violence.

Last year saw the highest ever rates of hate crime. This year saw those figures increase further, so we continue to experience the highest rates on record. Hate crime remains under-reported, so these figures are only the tip of the iceberg.

7.8% of all hate crimes recorded in this period were religiously-motivated (accounting for 11,419 cases). Taken together, religious and racially-motivated hate crime made up over 80% (81.3%) of all hate crime in England and Wales.

Runnymede Trust @runnymedetrust.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Over 100,000 (107,926) hate crimes recorded in this period were racially-motivated. This accounts for almost three quarters (73.5%) of all hate crime.

Home Office figures released today show that hate crimes have reached a new record level. In the year ending March 2026, racially-motivated hate crime increased by 9% compared to last year, with a 13% increase in religiously motivated hate crime.

In his own words, Jason asked “only for understanding, for compassion, and for the space to begin again.” He was denied this. There must be a reckoning with the media and academic actors that created and fuelled the specific racism that shaped the final years of his life.

Dog-whistle politics has real consequences. The normalisation of racist, anti-immigration rhetoric leads to the racist scenes we’re witnessing in Thetford, Norfolk. These have included the attempted storming of the homes of people seeking asylum, pelting with rocks & chanting “we want them out”.

This call to ban non-EU ‘foreign nationals’ from social housing is yet further advancement of far-right, anti-immigration narratives. Not only would it be clearly racialised, but it does nothing to solve the structural problems with the housing system caused by decades of under-investment.
