One year on from the horrific Heaton Park Synagogue attack, our thoughts are with the family and friends of Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz. May their memory be a blessing.
One year on from the Heaton Park Synagogue attack we are remembering Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz. May their memory be a blessing.

Our solidarity is also with Jewish communities across the country who have faced an often difficult and unsettling twelve months. We should all be deeply troubled by the rise in antisemitism and the fear and insecurity it has caused Jewish people throughout the UK.

It is clear that our society is still facing too much division and too much hate, with too many people made to feel unwelcome and unsafe.

Now, more than ever, we must reaffirm our shared values of compassion and responsibility to one another. If we do that we can build a more cohesive, united Britain, where all can live in dignity, security, and feel belonging.

The reopening of the UK's resettlement scheme is welcome - but far more must be done. We're urging the Home Secretary to scale up this scheme and urgently reopen family reunion. By doing so we can ensure that the UK truly does its fair share for those in need of protection, wherever they are from.
HIAS+JCORE is clear: safe routes save lives.

The reopening of the UK’s resettlement scheme is therefore welcome news.

It’s a step in the right direction towards a fairer system where people seeking sanctuary can do so without being forced into dangerous journeys.

We’re pleased too that the Home Secretary recognises the importance of this.Earlier this week, in her speech to the Labour Party conference, Shabana Mahmood rightly acknowledged that: “it is not fair those with a genuine need of protection cannot find a safe and legal way to claim asylum.”

The context is different today; but as British Jews, we understand just how true her statement is.

But we need the Government to go much further. Only a few hundred people will be offered protection initially – and that’s simply not enough.
So we’re calling for the Home Secretary to scale up this scheme, and to match that by urgently reopening refugee family reunion.

There is nothing compassionate or responsible about keeping families divided.

Our Jewish values of solidarity and welcome compel us to continue to speak out for a system which truly does its fair share for those in need, wherever they are from.

Our statement on the disturbing events in Dover and Portsmouth last weekend.
HIAS+JCORE stands in solidarity with refugee and migrant communities after last weekend’s disturbing events in Dover and Portsmouth.

Through our own community’s history, we understand what it means to need the UK’s safety – and, at times, to face hostility on arrival.

The scenes of far-right protestors dressed in black and wearing masks bring worrying echoes of darker periods of this country’s past.

We will always stand with people fleeing danger today. While we know that the compassionate majority rejects such hatred, we must also be clear that these events did not occur in a vacuum.

For too long, media narratives and policy approaches have intensified a sense of “us and them”, risking further division and harming integration.

A better, fairer, and more compassionate alternative is possible.

Rightful condemnation of last weekend’s events must just be the start: we now need politicians to rethink, and prioritise policy which ensures our society is safe and welcoming for all in this country.

Our statement on the deeply worrying recent events in Belfast and across the United Kingdom.
HIAS+JCORE is deeply worried by recent events in Belfast and across the United Kingdom.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victim of Tuesday evening’s attack and their family. While details are still being confirmed, the reported information is profoundly disturbing.

However, it is contemptible that this shocking incident has been used to incite racist violence and stoke division.

Across Belfast, people and entire communities have been left terrified and subjected to appalling intimidation. The ugly scenes of houses and cars set alight – leaving many scared for their lives – have no place in our society. We express our solidarity to all those who were forced to flee or hide in their homes yesterday evening. No one should have to live through such fear.

Worryingly, such outbreaks of violence are becoming a repeated pattern. Be it Southport, Southampton, or Belfast, we are horrified that the far-right are seeking to exploit horrific events for their own hateful, dangerous agenda.

As an organisation guided by Jewish experience, we also recognise uncomfortable historic parallels in such unrest.

Our community perhaps understands more than most what it means to be made to feel unwelcome and marginalised.oday, we need to continue to stand alongside migrant and refugee communities who will be understandably distressed. People who have made the UK their new home must be able to live in peace and dignity.

Now, more than ever, is the time for responsible leadership, that makes clear there is no place in our national conversation for rhetoric which fuels tension and division. By speaking out against racism, and making a positive case for welcome, our politicians can help build a strong, cohesive society that is safe for all.

This Government has all too often failed refugees and people seeking asylum. We're concerned that today's King's Speech leads us further down an unwelcoming, hostile path. As we move into the new parliamentary term, we need political leaders to show solidarity and return compassion to policy.
Since their election in July 2024, this Government has all too often failed refugees and people seeking asylum.

Consecutive Home Secretaries have introduced policies that attack refugee rights – from curtailing access to citizenship and pausing refugee family reunion, to scrapping permanent refugee status.

Time and again displaced people have cruelly been used as a political football.

We are now worried that today's King's Speech leads us further down an unwelcoming, hostile path: one where deterrence is prioritised over protection.

The new Immigration Bill announced puts into motion the Government's Earned Settlement Model, which will see refugees wait years for access to settlement. We are also concerned about the reinterpretation of human rights law – weakening protection from torture and the right to family life.

HIAS+JCORE believes that Britain is at its best when we show welcome and lead with compassion. That is what our community once needed; it is what refugees today deserve too.

So, as we move forward into another parliamentary term, we urge the Government to take responsible actions that promote dignity, respect, partnership and solidarity.

HIAS+JCORE is deeply distressed by the stabbing attack on two Jewish men in Golders Green this morning. We are relieved to hear that both individuals are now in a stable condition, and we wish them a quick and full recovery.

This is a difficult and unsettling time for the UK Jewish community. Today’s attack is sadly just the latest in a series of worrying antisemitic incidents that we need an urgent end to. It is simply unacceptable that British Jews are facing fear as they go about their everyday lives.

There can never be any place in our society for violence and hate – whether it is directed at our community, or anyone else. In the face of these challenges, we remain committed to working alongside others to confront hatred, build solidarity, and create the better, safer country we all need.

We're horrified by the cowardly arson attack on four Hatzola ambulances this morning. At this alarming time of rising antisemitism, we must continue to stand together against hate, wherever it is found.
HIAS+JCORE is alarmed by the antisemitic arson attack on four Hatzola ambulances this morning.

While we are relieved that no-one was injured, this shameful incident will heighten anxiety across the Jewish community.

Hatzola provides vital services to people of all communities and faiths. That spirit of solidarity and responsibility is so important amidst a time of growing division and tension.

Today’s attack was a cowardly assault on those compassionate principles.

But at a time of rising antisemitism, we must continue to stand together with others to build the safer, more cohesive society we all need.

It's incredibly concerning that any political party would propose introducing an ICE style deportation agency in the UK. ➡️ Swipe through to read our full statement. @hias.org
Reads: In recent weeks, we have all seen the horrific consequences of ICE raids across the United States. Amidst this backdrop, we are incredibly concerned that Reform UK is proposing the introduction of a similar deportation agency in the UK.
Let us be clear what this would mean. People left terrified to go to work. Children unable to go to school. Members of our own local communities scapegoated and too frightened to walk the streets.
Reads: When punitive enforcement and divisive narratives trump dignity and welcome, the very fabric of our society is damaged. Our partner organisation, HIAS, is already witnessing these impacts every day through the refugees and immigrants they serve. Their experience should be a warning to us all: when we allow our immigration policy to be led by hate and fear, not compassion and responsibility, the results can be catastrophic.Reads: This is a worrying moment. But guided by our Jewish values, we will continue to advocate for an immigration system that upholds human dignity, and where values of solidarity and fairness are core.
