Rivers of London: Murder, Brutalism, and Cheeky Nandos
This is part four of a series exploring the source material from The Rivers of London novels by Ben Aaronovitch which has given rise to a charming RPG from Chaosium. This series explores inspirations for and attitudes about playing the game, hoping to encourage gamers to look past the expectations of typical urban fantasy and police procedurals to find the beautiful and moving moments of something much deeper. It would be nice too, if readers who have not yet tried a roleplaying game but love the series, could be enticed by this series to give it a try. The world you love in the books can come to life in your own play. It's a kind of magic.

In the Midst of Shades is a game about Victorian ghost hunters. No one else believes in ghosts. But, you can see them and know they're a threat. Trouble is, the ghosts know you're a threat, too. #Sanction www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/4...

Here's a scholar working on an 11th cent. Arabic work, Umdat al-Kuttab, about making inks. My cursory internet search doesn't give me any sign it was available in translation in Ars Magica's time period...but this kind of technical resource is exactly what wizards of the Order of Hermes would seek!

Rivers of London: ‘Tis the Season for Novellas
This is part three of a series exploring the source material from The Rivers of London novels by Ben Aaronovitch which inspired and supports a streamlined BRP roleplaying game by Chaosium. The motivation behind the series is to explore approaches to playing the game, and to acknowledge and inspire gamers to look past the upbeat and humorous writing, punctuated by police procedure and magical action, to find the beautiful and moving moments of perhaps unexpected potency which make the books stand out. The combination, if grasped and brought into a game, is killer.

Roy, the miracle dog, has recovered from his traumatic fear of being touched. He now cuddles and insists on helping to write #ttrpg blog posts and edit video. He does this out of love he assures me. He has to whisper, of course, as someone in his past removed his voice before casting him aside.

Rivers of London: Riots, and Jazz, and Sten Guns, oh my!
This is part two of a series exploring the source material of The Rivers of London roleplaying game by Chaosium which should surprise no one is the Rivers of London book series by Ben Aaronovitch. In part one, we did a ridiculously quick overview of the premise of the series, an even faster overview of the game, and made a note about how the upbeat and humorous writing, punctuated by police procedure and magical action, was also home to beautiful and moving moments of perhaps unexpected potency. In this installment, the first three books are to be brought into the Achieving Best Evidence suite and without benefit of Molly's cooking, will give up some of the secrets they have been hiding.

Rivers of London: Not all Magic and Laughter (or dice)
The reason I am doing this small series on the Rivers of London is motivated by the existence and quality of the RPG, of course, but it is also about the real moments of truly beautiful writing which present moments of profundity in what could otherwise be taken as an yet another urban fantasy or police procedural. Looking at a book cover or hearing a description is more likely to be reductive or simply comparative. Those moments, secreted throughout the series, deserve better.

This is of real importance in coming to terms with what satisfies you in the play of an #RPG #ttrpg. Importantly, some in your group might want the opposite or somewhere in between. Finding where your group stands in harmony isn't always possible, but it's worth it to find out~
Quotation from a Tom Bissell Q&A on May 13, 2025 regarding Andor Season 2, Episodes 10-12, by director Tony Gilroy: "Hey, you just got stop pitching plot. Plot is BS, Plot is what happens when you get the behavior right. Pitch me a line of dialogue, pitch me atmosphere, pitch me something visual. Stop pitching stuff that happens. Anyone can come up with a bunch of 'interesting things that happen in sequence,' but if there's no emotional undercurrent, if there's nothing holding it up, it's just empty spectacle."

What if, for the sake of discussion, everything that you believe to be true about roleplaying games were true, but let's also note that that "you" is not the singular, but the plural. We can rightfully expect, I think, for the sum of all those perspectives to seem chaotic. Of course, not all that each of us believes to be true about RPGs really is true, but a lot is - at least, from a certain point of view.

#RPGaDAY: Day 31 – Edge (Ability; Fair; Continuum)
Today is Monday, August 31st and the final day of #RPGaDAY2026. As usual, it has been a privilege to witness how different communities all over the world have taken time out of their lives and social media activities to share their love and appreciation for roleplaying games and the people who play them. It's fantastic. David and I talk a little about it in our Closing Video so I don't need to use space and your time to write about it here. Instead, let's get to the final prompt: Edge. On the infographic, today starts its own single-day week, so we get 'ability' as one filter, and 'fair of face' for the other. The game I have chosen for today is one that is out on the fringes of RPG conversation. Today, my response will be drawn from Continuum: Roleplaying in the Yet by Aetherco / Dreamcatcher Multimedia.

#RPGaDAY2026 – Some Memorable Responses
The most important aspect of #RPGaDAY in any year is not finishing all of the prompts or being on time with responses, but being positive about roleplaying games and gamers. Over the course of 31 days, that positivity sparks fond memories, reignites old interests, or fans the flames of new ones. Below I have taken a special or representative post from 31 different sources that caught my eye during August 2026. I hope you will take some time in September to take a look at what these sources had to offer for the event this year and, if you can, let them know that you were there~
