Re-reading "Not in God's Name" by the late Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. Feels extremely relevant to the rise of far-right Christian nationalism today, even though that isn't the main danger Sacks saw eleven years ago. Especially his message that religion has to be part of the solution.

Yes, it is fundamental to Tolkien's project and it's success, already in the Hobbit, that he's not just trying to emulate dark age saga's and medieval epics. He's creating a bridge between those, largely abandoned, traditions and contemporary modernity!

This is unironically part of Tolkien's secret sauce as an author though. People think of him as writing a fantasy epic, but it's the *contrast* between the "low art", silly, familiar stuff and the epic, grand-poetry stuff that makes it work. It wouldn't be nearly as good with just one or the other.

I've never really seen the issue with the idea that God made the whole universe but has a special care for humanity. Weird but true story from the one time I did jury duty: a witness described someone as wearing a "nightgown", and the judge interjected to ask if she meant "dressing gown" as "people might be imagining Ebenezer Scrooge". The Blessed Virgin Mary's tomb is in Ephesus, as is the house she spent her final days living in.

I struggle to see this as a criticism. A Monster Manual is an encyclopedic & utilitarian kind of sourcebook, I don't think it's intended to be read front to back. I don't find bestiaries *thrilling* (with some exceptions) but I've found them *useful* for games that provide them.
