One of the reasons why the debate around Zionism is racism is that it asks us to detach culture and cultural identity from nationalism and the nation-state. Beyond being something not really done in the West before, it also asks us to truly consider the profound limits of liberal nationalism.

Thanks again for all your work over the years on this Nick. It was always incredible to have someone lay it all out so clearly over years. No matter how much Man City lied and gaslighted everyone.

Centrism will never beat the allegation that its a tone of voice rather than a cohesive ideology or set of principles. And a lot of politics journalists will never beat the rap of being completely useless at explaining the stakes of our political battles.

So let me get this straight the Greens are extreme.. because Shoebridge? The LNP are both extreme AND centrist because of immigration. Oh and to conclude Karvelas notes One Nation wants to extra-judicially punish their political enemies. In this article I guess all three things are the same?

rukitty.bsky.social @rukitty.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Or Karvelas wonders is Angus Taylor's focus on immigration also sensible centrism* TM.
100
rukitty.bsky.social @rukitty.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Now let's see how the LNP have changed according to Karvelas. Firstly Ley was trying to move the LNP to the centre and represent modern Australia. She did this by focusing on immigration. Meanwhile the nasty Angus Taylor has fully rejected the sensible centre* TM by.. also focusing on immigration.

For example for the Greens Larissa Waters was very productive and worked with Labor on their Environmental legislation. As opposed to the confrontational Adam Bandt who... also worked with Labor on their Environmental legislation?

rukitty.bsky.social @rukitty.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
First Karvelas wants you to know they were both smashed in the election. This is because voters wanted Albo's sensible centrism* TM (please don't ask for the policies) while the Greens and LNP both foolishly chased the extremes. So both learned their lesson and chose to move to the centre again.

rukitty.bsky.social @rukitty.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I know its a bit silly to criticise a Karvelas article. (They're never very good) But it is funny to read an article about the rejection of the "Sensible Centre" that talks about LNP, Greens and One Nation all together. Why dear reader what traits do all these parties share? Well strap in and see

The Liberals and Greens appear to be heading in the same direction
Anthony Albanese promised to be "the adult in the room" and govern from the centre. But is that still the political mood as we enter the last part of 2026?

Carla is also absolutely right here: this is going to force the Greens into endless navel-gazing and constantly having to talk about this motion at every single political event from now on.

Opposing military aid to Ukraine is not a ‘non-violent’ position, it is an explicit selection between the two available positions, both violent. You can’t say ‘we oppose Russia’, without then explaining, with what?

Genuinely curious why this would be the final straw? It seems it's been Greens policy from the beginning. And the war has been going on for over a decade now. (by the way I agree the Greens are wrong and we should send weapons to Ukraine)

rukitty.bsky.social @rukitty.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Refusing to send weapons to Ukraine is indeed a mainstream position often taken up by the "West".
000
rukitty.bsky.social @rukitty.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think the point is that Western powers have refused to give Ukraine weapons often. Since the invasion, Ukraine has had to beg for every plane, tank and missile. The West could have backed Ukraine forcibly, instead it has often refused because they fear Russian retaliation and escalation.

I disagree with the position but even Obama, Biden, Trump, France, Germany etc have all been leery of sending weapons or too many weapons to Ukraine. Shoebridges position is pretty normal.

rukitty.bsky.social @rukitty.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I disagree with Shoebridge and think we should send weapons to Ukraine. But Shoebridge is pretty clear Russia's invasion of Ukraine is illegal and should be opposed. That is not the same as a Tankies position.

(i'm not American) I still think of the South Asian guy who approached when I was catching a bus to a pro-pali protest. He was very keen to talk about it, and said he hoped Trump would win so he could stop it. Didn't matter what I said about Trumps comments and record he thought Trump was the guy.

I am curious Toby what you think of the choice to abstain over Gaza as an individual choice. It's clear you think it was wrong for people to use Gaza as a way to shame people for voting for Kamala. But for the people who said "I'm sorry I just can't vote for someone I hold responsible for genocide"

I am not a populist, these things should be done not because their popular but because its good policy. But it's weird to pretend these policies are the extremist views of a minority when the vast majority of the public sees them as common sense.

I found it so strange people got furious at the Greens asking for cooperation on their three most popular and least controversial policies. Taxing gas exports net +45, AUKUS not worth it net +20, public housing should be the priority in Gov housing policy +33 over any other option.
